Default T5 conversion cost

Just a quickie guys.

What price should a T5 conversion cost (minus labour, ECU, spigot bearing, clutch cable) from an EF or similar?

Also a price on a decent heavy duty clutch?

Thanks

I can get a complete EF XR T5 conversion from FTG Auto Salvage for $1250. I'm happy with that, saves a lot of stuffing around. But I got a couple of queries:

Has anyone used an EF/EL T5 box in their EB/ED? If so, how did you go about the wiring? NZ told me I can adapt the wiring from my auto loom pretty easily.

I know the pedal box won't be the same but I have one sorted out so that shouldn't be a problem.

I'm sitting on two T5 wiring looms, will plug straight into the auto plug.

Are there any differences between EF and EL T5's? And do the XR's get different ratio's? Silly questions maybe, but good information to know down the track ;)

I'll let you know when I figure it out...

have you read the conversion guid on Ford tech Luke ? With the wiring, you might have to swap a few of the pins on the gearbox loom so they match up with the engine side of the loom, and ground the neutral starter.

I think I allready told you, but I got a Valeo HD clutch kit + flywheel maching (you must do this when putting in a new clutch!) for $300, clutch kit included the clutch, Presure plate and a new Ford thrust bearing. So maybe $250 for the clutch kit on it's own, Ebay allways have cheap ones going at Sunbury brake and Clutch. You'll need a clutch tool aswell, i've got one you could borrow, it's pretty easy to do by feel if you know what you're doing though.

Yeah thanks Damo I've had a few reads of the tech doc. I saw those clutches on Ebay, just didn't know if they're any good or not.

I can get a loom off Rob and a pedal box from Karl. So that shouldn't be a problem. I just don't know whether it's worth paying $1250 for the EF conversion (no ecu) with 170/180k kms. I just need a frigging car to drive.

Ebay clutch

paided $650 for my last conversion, I replaced the following as they were worn + $200 for the clutch + $100 for a new clutch cable. so $950 all up.

Think thats a bit cheeky, price wise.

I asked a few months back and FTG said 1200 even WITH the ecu...

I reckon boxes should be cheaper...they're only getting older!

That's what I don't understand. A few months back it was about $750 cash, and now an extra $500?!?

I think I might look elsewhere.

Does anyone know what Deer Park Wreckers or whatever it's called charge for a conversion and if they get good wrecks in??

Default T5

Im doing a conversion at the moment.... and just a bit of advice...

Try and match the conversion to the model of your car Eg Pedal box.
If you have cruise then more mods are needed.

the difference between ED - EL T5 is that the EL has syncros into reverse and the ED doesent. (been told to keep with a XR Box)

I have had trouble fitting a ED Pedal box to my EL a decent amount of mods is needed.

The best way to fit the clutch pedal is to buy the adaptor from Mal Wood Automotive. That way you know everything is going to fit with little fuss.

Best advise i can give is (if your not mechanical minded) pay a pro to do it, it will be done properly, and on time. not to mention the medical bills to replace the bare nuckles and the blood transfusion.

Luke that's a good clutch on Ebay, they're pretty heavy though.

Gunns - $100 for a clutch cable ? you got ripped, they're $60.

Vegabass - ED boxes have the reverse syncro, it's only the EA box that doesn't, not that it's a big deal.

My clutch on my fairmont cost me more than the EA box I have behind my V8. Yes it doesn't have that damn synchro in reverse which is a pain. Shop around, but I guess the prices thrown around here are pretty much on the mark. My brother in law put a T5 out of XH ute into his ED with no dramas and with a synchro in reverse. As for the loom, it really is simple, just check out the tech guide mate. The hardest bit is the pedal box, but you can just get the longer pin and this other thing that bolts to the side of your auto pedal box which would make it alot easier and quicker that putting in a manual pedal box. Good luck, its very worthwhile....

yeh i got the mal wood pin and im sure it saved my mech a ton of time. i did pay a fair bit to get it done but i would never have been able to do it and i didnt have another car to use to get to work everyday. in the end the only things wrong were the reverse lights which i just switched the plugs round and now its fine and i dont have cruise control anymore for some reason but i havent really been up behind the dash to see why. it just gives me an excuse to put a new small wheel on now.

EDIT: i have the same clutch as that ebay ad. its been a bit of a bugger for my poor underdeveloped left leg sitting in traffic but its really quite smooth with normal driving. it copped my first couple of weeks of high rev hill starts and bad clutching and its still as good as it was when it went in.

XF-EB1 boxes don't have the reverse brake. It's not even a synchro.

Deer Park wreckers are self serve BTW.

Default Reasons why...

this is why you should buy mal woods bolt on kit!!!

These 3 nuts hold in the pedal box

And this is what you have to do to get to the little &^%$#

and at the moment the ECU is still a bit confused. but i think it will settle down.

I hope

Anyone got pics of this Mal Wood clutch pedal pin thing?

I've heard the AU box has the shifter in a slightly different position but how different is it to an EL? would an AU box still fit in an EL?

my T5 sonversion costed me a bit in the end i paid $450 for complete setu off Al but in the end also bought new

New Clutch $230
New Fly wheel $140
New Clutch Cable $60
GT gear boot $25
new Oil $25
Spigot bearing $15
ED XR Manual ECU $200
Clutch cable dust cover $8
the rubber thing on the end of the clutch fork where the cable goes on to $ 22

so $725 + $450 = one damn expensive T5 conversion :P $1175

What obvious signs of potential probs can be seen externally on a t5 box?
And is there a sure way to find out exactly how many Km's a box has done?

I might i will have to go through my pics. it looks simular but there is no welded plates in there but the hole for the shaft is there. basicly the kit is a drill the holes for the nuts and bolts and away you go. I just welded in a extra support plate.
Will look for other pics

Yes i do have pics of the unmodified pedal box so ill post them a little later
