Default Removing gear box with engine in car

Who's done it in an EA-EL I6? How hard is it? And how the hell do you get access to the top bolts on the bellhousing?

Cheers

Its easy as. You undo the cross member and use a jack to slightly lower the back of the trans which will also tilt the engine back slightly. You should then have enough room to get to the top bellhousing bolts with a couple of long extenstion bars.

The extension bar option is the easiest, although, I have seen it done by lifting the back of the box, tilting the entire engine forward. You then use a spanner to get to the top bolts. Not too difficult, easier to get to them with an extension bar, wait, some extension bars, need a few.

Yeah as said some long extension bars makes it really easy. Also it makes it very easy if you get the car up nice an high, the higher the easier to work with.

I had very little drama doing mine with with a spanner from the top of the engine you just have to get rid of all the air intake stuff.

Do you have any trouble getting enough torque onto the bolts?

That's what I was wondering, but so many people have done it so it obviously can be done with enough persistence!

The first trans I did it was with a few extensions and a nice breaker bar.

I decided that sucked, so the other 10 trans swaps I did I bought a compressor and rattle gun. Makes the job so much easier.

And by dropping the rear engine mount is enough to get to all the bolts. And its easier on earlier models as they dont have that thick heat/sound mat of the firewall that the EF/EL's get.

I found it bloody hard to remove the t5 from my EA Ghia as one pice, all the sound deadner was in the way.

Much Much easier to take the gearbox off the bellhousing, and then undo the bellhousing.

ended up being much quicker for me.

I just bought a 600mm 1/2" extension bar, so hopefully that helps. I will probably buy another one if it doesn't!!
