Depends on your type of driving, if you're into drag racing an auto is better but if you want 100% control of your engine and vehicle than manual is the only way to go.
On a track an auto won't allow you to get the best from the car or engine, and can be a handfull due to the converter flairing or the auto down/upshifting at the wrong time etc, you will also work the brakes harder with an auto.
But in traffic or cruising an auto is more relaxing.

Full manual auto allows you to control the auto as you want, you have to change gears, the auto will not do it for you, just like a manual just no clutch to worry about, the only drama is it's only a 3 speed

A manualised auto is fine on the upshift but the converter still kills its ability to maintain and progressively apply even power when you're on and off the throttle allot in corner situations, it also reduces the "engine braking" ability of the motor and the reduced number of ratio's is also a negative, it really comes down to what you want from the vehicle.

Heres a first, I actually agree with 4Vman on something 100%. On the race track an auto, of any kind, will never match a manual.

Also depends on the gearing. 1st in a T5 is waaay shorter than my BTR's 1st :S

110kph in 1st = doughy takeoff

I have the tip tronic in my TS50, and I would never get another auto.
It's all about the sound for me, the manual craps on the auto, I actually feel embaressed to drive the auto. As for take off, I don't think the auto is much better at all. For me, unless it's a drag only car, Auto's are grandpa cars.

the tiptronic (aka ESS) is still an auto gearbox i.e. no clutch

auto with stall, full manual valve body and reverse shift pattern, ull never beat it its like driving a manual without the hassel of a clutch and snaps into gear twice as hard as any manual if done right

[QUOTE=loxxr6
Then there's the worry that you'll do a clutch when you put some power through it....and that ain't easy to fix. It seems an auto is a lot less drama.[/QUOTE]

Clutch is easy to fix mate
A blown auto however is a much more costly expense

I love manual .... it's fun on the open road and the twisties as well.

But have done for auto cos of courier work in Sydney ... manual sucks in traffic in the city and carrying load ... also auto is much better for towing as well.

To beat a manual you need a hi stall torque convertern an auto and if you want to take it further a really hard shift kit

Yep...its hard making up for that super tall first gear in the standard 4-speed auto. The new 6 speed ZF auto is a different story again though, it looks absolutely awesome.

But nothing beats a manual for circuit racing or spirited mountain drives ;)

I think an auto has the advantage of torque mutiplication over the manual. But the manual gives an extra 10-15 rwkws on the same motor.I suppose its what your used to.

Manual for me only because autos suck too many kilowatts from the rear wheels.
