Default Porsche Cayman GT4

Quote:
Porsche has officially unveiled the Cayman GT4, following last week's teaser image in Real Racing 3.

Set to debut at the Geneva Motor Show, the Cayman GT4 is billed as a "clear statement that Porsche will continue to promote radical two-door sports cars in the future."

Power is provided by a 3.8-liter flat-six engine that develops 385 PS (283 kW). It is connected to a six-speed manual transmission that enables the car to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 4.4 seconds before hitting a top speed of 295 km/h (183 km/h). Futhermore, Porsche says the model lapped the Nürburgring Nordschleife in 7 minutes and 40 seconds.

The business case for this is a funny one.

Is it meant to be an entry level Porsche? Why does one buy a GT4 Cayman and not a 911?

Nice to see it gets a real manual gearbox unlike the new GT3.

Cayman and Boxter are entry level Porsche, but they are totally different drive to a 911. Biggest difference is the Cayman and Boxter are mid engine RWD cars (engine behind seats in front of rear axle) excellent forward rear balance, the 911 being a RWD rear engine car is a much more difficult item to go fast as there is a definate weight rearward issue. At the speed limit and in the hands of a normal person either is ok at speed the Cayman is easier to corner and control than a 911 especially for those not used to the characteristics of a 911.

What will be interesting now that the cayman is being given power levels closer to 911 spec the racers will want the better balanced Cayman this is why Porsche have always kept the Cayman under the 911 power so as not to loose sales of their flagship models.

GT3 equivalent of the Cayman?
Different beast to the 911, mid engine vs rear engine. 2 seater vs "4 seater."

Aside from the difference in RR vs MR (which most people wont care about unless your hitting the track) I guess I struggle to understand why you would buy a 911? Other than just getting it for the badge.

Surely it would give everything other than the Turbo and GT3 a fair shake for alot less coin?

I agree, to be honest even without the GT4, I'd take a Cayman over any 911 under a Turbo or GT3.

Be interesting to see what the next gen Cayman/Boxster twins have in terms of engines, the V4 and small 6? Leaving the bigger turbo 6's for the 911?
