Ok, story time.
A few years back I purchased a BA XR8 from a guy in Victoria who brought it down from NSW, where it had been written off as a repairable write-off. Prior to his ownership it was repaired poorly in NSW, and after it made the trip south it failed the VIV inspection in Victoria. I subsequently bought the vehicle and after a lot of stuffing around it passed the inspection, roadworthy and I subsequently got it on the road. Fast forward to now and after years of the daily grind it's looking sad and sorry for itself. Over time it's revealed a few nasty surprises as well, so I'm starting to think about taking it off the road for a period of time and turning it back into something special. Obviously it will always be a written off vehicle, it will always be on the register which is fair enough. I suppose my question is this. I have always been under the impression that like a RWC, your VIV certificate was valid for x number of days. If I were to ever let the registration lapse, I would need to get a new RWC to get it registered (like any other car) and I would need to get a new VIV certificate and go through the whole inspection process again. Is this correct? Or once it has passed a VIV inspection, though it will always be on the register, it will be treated like any other car? |

AFAIK once it has passed a VIV it is taking of WOVR.
Personally, I'd call VicRoads and ask. Perhaps all cars must have to keep a history and once a Write off, always a write off. Let us know how you go with Vic Roads.

It will always be a written off car, but instead of it showing up as written off it will show up as an inspected written off from memory or something similar.
You only need to get a RWC to get it back on the road. VIV only needs to be carried out once and if passed you will not have to get another VIV. But IMO I would seriously considering taking it off the road and not putting it back on the road due to the nasty surprises you have found. The car could be a death trap. You can pick up a BA XR8 these days for under 10 grand. http://www.carsales.com.au/private/d...2596315/?Cr=15 |

I have put half a dozen back on the road.
The VIV is only done once...BUT...at times they forget to update the WOVR register and delays ensue getting it sorted out. A written off vehicle is often just too expensive to repair, not necessarily a death trap. hail damaged cars are a classic example of that. and...the VIV is a rort, 500 bucks for nothing. an absolute joke.... |

It's also developed the usual knocks in the rear end recently that I'm trying to chase down. It would benefit from some love and care but it would never be worth doing it in a financial sense. See what happens i guess. Thanks all. |

I have done +/- 250,000km's in it with no additional problems and the good one is now worth about 3K, mine is probably worth 2K. So have I lost 10K or 1K or gained 2K? If you do it to sell its harder to not loose money, do it to keep and the financials are easier to balance, oh and shortest Ive ever owned a car is 6 years...damn VW's JP |

Incorrect.Once it's on the WOVR,it's on there for good.
The VIV is only needed for the initial repair of whatever caused it to be written off and the NEVDIS status gets changed to "Inspected" after that.
