FWIW i got a trade value of $30,000 for my 2013 GS ute, 50,000km 500hp, mods etc..sold it privately within 1 day of being on carsales for $40,000

Surely it's just the convenience. Drive in your old piece of crap, drive out with shiny new car.

Otherwise sell privately and make more money on it to pay off new shiny quicker, but then you might be without a car for a while, have to hold off until you find a buyer, etc.

My gf traded in her old Festiva, got $100 for it, but just wanted it gone.
An old boss wanted to trade her Mercedes, its second hand value pretty much equal to the Cerato she was buying, but they weren't giving her anywhere near that value.

The difference in price you get for the car is the cost of your time and effort in selling it. Only you know what that's worth to you.

I was offered 2.5 K for my 2007 SY AWD Ghia, with 270,000 on the clock, as a trade in on a new FGX XR6, stuff that! Instead I will give it away to my Son for nothing.
