I going to change the trans filter in my BTR, I have about 2 litres left over of Castrol transmax that i bought about 12 months ago, is it still ok to use?

It seems to last a pretty long time in the ground.
I don't think oil has an expiry date. I've got bottles that are a few years old too.

Iv'e seen metal drums where the bottom has rusted but the oil was still good,so I reckon it would last forever plus a year or two

if its been sitting for years give it a shake, I've seen very old bottles of HPR30 where the additives have separated and the oil came out a very strange colour

Auto trans fluid is known to attract water/moisture. So be sure the bottle was sealed well.

Yep as paulie said the main thing to worry about is moisture ingress into the oil which then allows bacteria to grow because there is water/air/light/minerals present.
I would give it 2 years shelf life tops. Wouldn't feel comfortable putting 5 year old oil into my car. Last edited by moneypit; 20-06-2017 at 12:19 AM. |
