If it's the factory fittment it will be 28spline! 28 spline diffs started in the EBI or EAII or something. It should have a 3.27 ratio aswell, just in case you were wondering that.

The LSD I just put in my ED ( the third one ) has a preload of 115lb. It's still not good enough, Lockrite hear I come!!!
Also kyro 02, you may ask, if I want a diff that's better than LSD, why not mini spool? Been there, done that. No Good! I strongly advise, go the Lockrite as aposed to the spool. |

yeah im gonna look at my diff in a min and see what it says... its definately a single spinner, always spins the right wheel in dry but will change from the right to the left rear spin... and i sometimes get the slightest of whins sounds at about 60-80km/h... but i'm thinking it's the tyres.. so i will get the diff inspected and may as well throw a locker in at the same time :P

with lockrite does it unlock when cornering so that rachett noise won't be there and you won't flick the back around in the wet? what problem did you have with a mini-spool, did you bust something and/or your tyres kept getting ruined? |

Rollin, what did your lockrite centre cost? Here they seem to be arround the $590 mark. Easy as to install as well.

You've got that right. Spools will eventually ruin everything else in your drive line. They are completely unforgiving and because trailing arms are so far out towards the wheel on falcons it has no give at all. Commodores are much easier to live with a spool in, the upper arms are in towards the centre of the diff allowing the diff to move around a bit more. In a falcon the spool will just take control of the back of the car when trying to go around corners, then as soon as one wheel lets go both wheels spin and the car snaps out violently ( nothing like LSD ) and if your not ready for it you could be in some serious trouble. Don't get me wrong, I love spools, there is nothing more absolute. They are great at events such as Powercruise (I have a spare diff with a spool in it for powercruise) but they are no good on the street. Not to mention Ilegal! |

Can someone give a run-down on the different types of Lockers? I was considering a Detroit or a Richmond (?) Locker.

I will post a couple of photo's of the inside of a Detriot tommorow. I don't know about the Richmond but the Detroit is awesome, best of both worlds. Unfortunately Detroits will set you back about $2000.
Lockrite is a simpler version of the Detroit. They are noisy though, but for roughly just over a quarter of the price of a Detroit they are a good choice. They just replace the planetary gears in an open centre, whereas the Detroit replaces the whole centre. There is also a Kaz LSD, which is technicaly not a locker but they are near enough. They are the most talented LSD on the market and diff builders say they will spin two wheels all day every day for 200 000 km's. That's a big call but for roughly $1800 (purchase price only) for the borg warner they would want to live up to that claim. That's all I know about, hope that helps someone. |

That is almost identical to the Detroit. That picture shows how it all works anyway.
Obviously when the teeth lock in together the diff is locked, but they also have the capability, by way of springs inside there, to unlock allowing safe and legal cornering. Thanks Walkinshaw. |

The 'lokka' on that website is nearly identical to the lock-rite I have in my car - it could even be the same thing - the picture at the top of the page could be for a landcruiser, and the design for BW diffs is the same as mine.
The two 'center' pieces in the pic are the same as mine, but my center uses the factory axle gears instead of the special sides shown. In a manual it requires a bit of extra effort for smooth progress, you have to dip the clutch and slip it back out when going round second gear corners for example, or it pig-roots pretty bad. In an auto I think it would be sweet, as the auto would keep a little preload on it and provide a smoother link to the engine. They are awesome but - you can turn the car around in its own length if you want to and you know its NEVER going to kick one wheel - very predictable, very easy to slide, and it takes a damn sight longer to kill than a GHEY BW lsd!!! (if i seem a bit anti-BW lsd its because I spent a disgusting amount of money getting my LSD rebuilt and tightened and made all sexy, and it lasted one track day at morgan park and another at QLD raceway, then it was cactus, i was SO upset!!!) Walkinshaw - thats a much better price than I have been quoted - My lockrite was already fitted to a 3.7 EA diff, so I got it second hand. I have been told $700 for a lockrite is about normal, I think if i break it I will be calling you for contact details on the $590 one!!! |
