Just been ringing around and all cat prices are still over the $250 mark. Here's the lowdown. Got some prices on Full Redback systems also, but the stock cat back system was replaced on 3/4/05 if my records are correct! LOL! The existing system is just over 2 years old! It's only done about 40,000 kays!

Metro Muffler Fit - Campbelfield

GK - find out how much to fit only, if you supply the cat. You can get the magnaflow cat from ebay for $160 delivered. I just got quoted $50 to fit the cat by my LPG mechanic.

Also, with cats back systems, you can get one off ebay for under $400, and they bolt up to the existing flanges, so fitting is free. They don't have a tip, but you can get a suitable tip from any autoparts store for under $50.

With fitting, the Glenroy/Melton prices actually seems OK. That would be $300 odd for the cats back, $200 for the cat and 1.5 hours labour to fit - which is around about right.

Cheers JC,

The wagon actually has another resonator in it doesn't it? It would go as such then; cat - resonator - muffler - resonator.

This as opposed the cat - muffler - resonator setup on the sedan.

That right?

If that's correct then, the fact that the redback for the sedan with tip was $400, the extra resonator and cat and installation would easily make up the $700!

It's almost a shame then that the existing cat back system has only done 40K!

No, the wagon has cat, then the redback system is bolted after the cat using a flange, and includes one largish centre muffler and a resonator near the tailpipe/tip.

In most cars, the cats back system bolts up to a flange after the cat. So there is no need to replace the cats back system, if all you need is just the cat. And even if it doesn't bolt up (if it's welded on instead), then it doesn't take much to cut the pipe and weld in a new cat.

Hey GK, if you go the Redback in the wagon, definitely go for the resonator option - you can order them with or without. Being a wagon though, they can get quite boomy without the resonator.

The wagon is the family vehicle so the resonator is a given! LOL!

I also went that way with the Redback system on the SR.

Cheers,

A 3rd way to break a cat is to hit a rock or something (wasn't me driving so dont know what was hit but made big dent in cat)
Shattered cat in half and blocked off airflow, car won't accelerate

At the risk of being stoned to death by all the oldies on here, pull it off bang it out and stick it back in! it will flow heaps better. Dont get caught though.

You are joking right. The cat has a very specific job to do to help keep our air breathable for now and future generations. It is irresponsible morons like you (if you are serious, that is) that put all that at risk. Having a cat or not does not affect flow that much - at least not enough to justify poisoning everyone around you.

I agree with JC it a very irresponsible act to hollow out any catalatic converters not only does it pollute the enviroment but it will make your car run bad in terms of idle quality and performance.

Not to mention the $10,000 dollar fine is your vechile is found to have had the cats hollowed out.

Took the car to exhaust shop today and confirmed my cat is dead so the lowdown is:

$154 for a standard cat supply and fit or
$290 for high flow cat supply and fit and ill be fitting it next week hopefully.

Going to the Performance Exhaust place on Saturday morning. I spoke with the owner Joe on the phone, nice bloke, then visited to check out the options.

So the deal will be pulling off and checking the current cat. If it's stuffed I'll get a new one (higher flowing and stainless - 10 year guarantee). Price is quite high @ $350. Then I'll probably get a Redback as well for another $350 with stainless tip. So all up $700, but around the corner from home.

$700 is a decent price for cat and exhaust - good stuff!

You probably don't need any encouragement, but a set of extractors would really finish it off nicely, don't you think

I ran no cat's on my XR8 for about 2 weeks. I only ran no cats for the fact that one collapsed and wouldnt flow so i had to hollow the other and didnt have 600 bucks to get the new high flow ones fitted at the time and i needed the car to get to work. Hopefuly this will clear things up for the more intelligent forum members.
