Your theory is flawed.. sorry...
Just went for a drive in my AU.... Fuel icon has the bowser handle on the right but an arrow on the left pointing to the left of the car...

I think this theory has some exceptions. That's an EL guage. They have the fuel door on the left (as it says on the tacho) and the nozzle of the pump on the right in the picture. |
