Yes lets buy me a GTHO Phase 3 :

In fact send me any kind of money on the damn cup. Bloody Tungsten Strike was winning the whole way and decided to lose at the end.

Back to drifting...............

How about something to off all the ricers and humiliate them.

Who would like to see a Ford LTD drifting????

Or a F250 Turbo diesel???

Please send me money :

i can see the RB26TT been a viable option for a mustang due it it been lighter then a small block....

most of the professional drift cars have close to a 50/50 weight balance i think???
also the lighter the car the easyier it is to control in a drift (to a certain point anyway)
so it has a few advantages i spose... not to mention the amount of things you can do to them now suspension wise

but... drifting in an XY would be pretty tough, especially if it was supercharged!!!! BWAH!!! IMAGINE THE SOUND AND THE SMOKE!!!! it'd crap all over the CAPA cars!!!!

I really don't think the RB26DET is lighter than the Windsor 302 and the Windsor offers linear power which is better for drifting.

And like I said earlier the actual Mustangs used for drifting were Windsor powered the RB26 Mustang was barely given any air time.

get your self an ea-b wagon, lock the diff,5sp manual with a tickford 4 litre with a bit of work.i had a ea with 3.9 mpfi locker in the rear and me i had some serious angles with it,i scared even myself and it was stock, all it had was exhaust,no extractors,it was standard manifold, and a pod filter my mates couldnt believe when i took them for a drive,we were doin 3rd gear about 90 kays sidewaysin a big open empty truck park, just stripp the interior to lighten the fat things up and put some decent shocks and you laughin, ive got an ed xr6 sedan at the moment and im considering another wagon with all the tickford gear in it

SICK!!!!!!!!!!

Might be another new trend... "pushing" instead of "drifting" for cars that understeer...?!

I agree with the idea of using a torquey V8 in a small chassis, as long as the balance is right.

Think of an old school (engine) clubman V8 – Westfield SEight, X7 or Elfin. I always thought they would be a good base to build on. The X7 still retained a live rear axle.

The Millens in America – I’d rather see Rod do Pikes Peaks than Rhys do drifto. But then again I’m not a big fan of drifting.

im personally against using a muscle car for drift but what ever you choose its in the suspension setup.
most people will tell you you need rock hard suspension.
the ideal setup is taking the perfect track set up and using a spring rate that is 200kg heavier then the track set up.

Thought the original question was about muscle cars drifting? Without having an argument about what constitues a 'Muscle Car', 90% of the cars mentioned or involved in drifting are not Muscle!

Drifting real muscle is like a VL boy rapping to Pink Floyd! Just not done!

These Jap cars are very popular for some basic reasons. Cheap HP and cheap body panels. And they come with late model suspension geometry and brakes. All easily replaceable too. The sport is popular in a country thats infinitely bigger than ours so if you choose to use a Japanese car you'll find it easy to pick up cheap 2nd hand parts such as roll cages, coilovers, suspension modification brackets, racing seats etc from import wreckers. Take a look at what they do to the front suspension re castor/camber and if possible take a spin to experience it. Then look at the front end of something like a Commodore and you'll realise you will have some trial and error fabricating ahead of you.

Nothing wrong with being unique. Just be prepared to pay extra in time and $$.

Thye motors need to rev out hard and make serious power or at least torque...
The Mustang in U.S used for drifting is supercharged...
An early Falcon with supercharged mod motor ??
The front suspension geometry needs changing to allow heaps of lock, especially opposite lock!! The Millen's said it not about hard suspension as they require grip to be competitive or the other car pulls away... I'd say GOOD shocks and sway bars...
Get as much weight out of the front as you can to prevent understeer...
Moving crossmember forward is an option??? Very good brakes also...

op, i must clarify, are you thinking of getting a pre 1990 car? that was my take on it. i have never seen a pre 1990 muscle car do well at a drift comp is what i was trying to say in my first post.

aeron has a few vids on the net with vl commo's going ok, turbo and just 6cyl, and there is no doubt that a v8 is a good engine to drift, so perhaps an e series will go well!

do a youtube search for falcon drift and you should come up with a few ideas, if you are even looking for a car in this age bracket. from your list it seems you may be looking at even older than that

cheers

I think the thread should have been titled "best non Japanese drift car",commodores and e-series are not Musclecars.

You think wrong.

A muscle car was a 60's/70's intermediate bodied American car with a bigblock.

I think there should be an entire thread trying to define this.

I think originally your definition is right with the muscle cars being mid sized and the Pony cars being short wheelbase but by the late 60's the pony cars were only a few inches shorter than the muscle cars, weighed 1600 kilos plus and could be optioned with a big block.

While in America the muscle car died in the early 70's in Australia it continued well into the 80's where it dwindled and now is facing a resurgence.

I classify a muscle car.

1)Produced by Ford, GM or Chrysler
2)Rear-Wheel Drive
3)Large capacity straight six or V8
4)Affordable
5)Power to weight ratio of at least 150kw/tonne??

While a VL Commodore may look Japanese I think at least the Group A cars should be considered muscle cars. As well as such things as the XR8 sprint which I think offered performance comparable to the GTHO.
