It will be equally interesting to see how the battle between the two heavyweights, Chevrolet with a rebadged Holden Caprice and Ford with an AWD version of the Mondeo actually pans out.

The Carpice PPV comes standard with the 6.2L version of the LS2 engine rated at 262 kW / 521 Nm although there is supposed to be a 6 cylinder option later with a 6 speed auto transmission. Fuel consumption figures aren't available yet but it is unlikely to better those of the EcoBoost Taurus.

The Ford offering is Taurus based and offers a 269kw / 480 Nm version of the Ecoboost engine with a 6 speed paddle shift auto. The AWD platform is presumably to overcome the limitations of the Taurus' FWD layout. It is rated at 17/25 mpg on the city / highway cycles.

The Dodge Charger variants (lucky buggers) are offered with either a 3.5 V6 (185kW / 339 Nm) or a 5.7L V8 with 274 kW/535 Nm and rated at 16/25 mpg.

Cheers
Russ

So being a Yank police car, they won't be seeing it in the Southern states then?

Saw in the business section of some Adelaide paper that it is rumoured that the Californian Police Dept (the famous black and white police cars) is going to order 10,000 Caprices. Dont know how credible it is. Remember California has the population roughly of Australia.

Massive coup for Holden if it happens, its probably the highest profile police force in the world.

Yes, that would indeed be a coup for Holden.

Californian Police Department??

Do you mean the California Highway Patrol? California doesn't have one single state police service. They did have a California State Police, however it hasn't existed for 15 years and was merged with the CHP in 1995.

Not sure how many cars exactly they run, but according to wikipedia around 5 years ago they only had a staff(incl. Admin staff) of 9k.... I find it unlikely that they'd have a thousand or so more cars than they do staff to drive them. Their cars also aren't the iconic "black and white" patrol cars you mention.

Maybe it's the LAPD the article referred to? As they are very well known, and run the "black/white" cars mentioned. They also however only have a 10,000 officers(not incl. admin staff) - and I find it unlikely they'd order them a car each.
