I`ve got a Tidy '77 F100 for a Daily and without fail everytime I stop at the servo I get someone asking "hows it on the petrol?, Yeah I/my dad/brother/uncle/cousin/Grandad had one of these back in the xx's Yeah went like stink aye, nah it was awesome what a beast" etc.

I reckon it`s just part & parcel of owning an older, less common vehicle. Part of the Charm, if you will

I was told by a hotted up VN driver ( of course ) at the servo that my "Stang" was the "sickest" looking car he had ever seen and he hates Fords...........

My misses loves when we go on cruises in the Pig.
Kids stuck to the window of there family 4WD as we pass, guy's in any other model Ford doing the double take and/or breaking there neck to see the car..
I'm happy for people to look and point but don't talk to me in traffic as I'm trying to drive.

The misses also pi$$es her self laughing when we go past someone else with a classic car and we give each other the "Nod"

I find it strange that some people in HSV's act poorly toward my FPV and yet a guy driving a Torrie or HQ give me a smile and the "Nod"

The funniest one I had was guy actually dropped to his knees and 'hailed' (haled?) the Fairlane as I was driving along Brighton beach once. I think alcohol played a fair part but it was pretty cool anyway.

I get people quietly checking out my AU. Judging by the look on their faces, its not one of sheer horror as most seem to think when it comes to the AU.

Interestingly, its from people driving whitegoods & P-platers....Envious much?

The ones who **** me off are the ones who insist on telling you what's genuine or not who clearly don't have a clue. Then they rattle on about a car they, or their family owned which was a genuine factory Phase 5 Ford Torana with a 350 Chev and 6 speed Brock gearbox...

If you want attention buy a FPV or XR in BREEZE... The amount of people asking the colour code for their "build up of random cars EVEN COMMIES!!!) i unbelieavable!!!!

MY GF doesnt understand the thought that i like the admiring looks.. from all sort of drivers..

The only thing that annoys me when I am driving the Coupe, is people who stare at the car when you are driving next to them and their car starts to wander into your lane....So many times I have had to point or beep the horn to get them to correct their steering.

Heaps of people have offered to buy the car and pics get taken all the time. I dont mind that at all. Shows people have taste!

I enjoy the thumbs up but the staring can be a little funny at times. The life story is ok when I'm not in a hurry. It can be annoying when they follow it up by pointing out every little scratch/paint chip etc they can see that requires a magnifine glass for any normal person.

Ill bet my bottom dollar that when my Galaxies are on the road, Ill get comments like "Nice Chevy" or "Is that an Oldsmobile?". As cranky as that will make me, Ill just politely inform them that its a FORD Galaxie. Given the Ford badging is very subtle on my models & what appears to be general lack of knowledge by whomever, I guess I should expect it.

I just go with the flow. Honestly, when it comes to driving an older car, it's something you come accustomed to, considering alot of older cars are starting to become scarce.

If they ask if it's for sale, I just say nope and go on my merry way. If they want to fault find, I just leave them go, as it's obvious they don't have a life to begin with.

For the most part it's pretty cool. It's like having a mini celebrity stutus every time you drive the car. Most people are polite and happy to see your car on the road, and it's a great feeling. There are 4 scenarios which i am not a fan of however.

Scenario 1: The bogans who try to egg you on to do a burnout. Yes, it is a mustang with a tweaked 351. It is more than capable of a meltdown should i choose to do so. I don't need to be challenged as to wether or not the car can do it, and if i don't do so, then tough titty. I'm not going to lose my car/licence and waste my expensive rubber on some tool i don't know and will never see again.

Scenario 2: the life story and wrong facts. I don't need to know if your brothers aunty's sisters 3rd cousins nephew owned one with a BIG 350 chev that really flew. Umm isn't the 350 a GM engine anyway mate?

It's nice to hear a little bit about someones love of the cars, but when it becomes a long winded and obscure reference to someone they hardly knew, or wrong facts, i just couldn't be bothered anymore.

Scenario 3: The folks who say hello and then instantly think it's ok to either lean on your car or open a door or run their hands over it etc. Excuse me? You are not a friend. And even a friend will know not to lean on my pride and joy or touch the paintwork. I hate it when people presume that they can do as they please since they did their obligitory hello. A stranger opening my door for a closer look is an instant way to make my blood boil. If i am asked, i will always oblige and let them have a seat even, but i DO NOT appreciate someone doing so without asking first.

Scenario 4: The fully sick hektic bro, kinda people who instantly start asking dumb or irritating questions, because they want to throw up a challenge with their POS riced up cars. You can tell they aren't genuinely interested in the car, except for fishing for a challenge.

The best comments are from people who keep it short and sweet. Nice car, or love the plates/colour etc. These are the people who make your day. A thumbs up as you drive past will bring a smile to both parties, and makes the 4 above scenarios bearable, since most of Joe public are respectable enough. It's all part of the joys of owning a classic car. And yes, i am also one of those who nod their head or give a small wave to other classic car owners.....

I get a lot of people who just stare with their mouths open as I go past. Quite a lot of cars like to drive in formation, follow me or sit at my right rear. Always get comments at the servo... I mean, like they've never seen a '79 tbird before.

Touching my cars paint work is a sore point for me

My friends all know that I take care of all my cars

A few of their wives run their fingers over the panels to check for dirt as some kind of running joke...makes my blood boil

I find it best to let it go and chamois the car when i get home....

I like the 'look and admire' kinda people...

But - there are 2 things that annoy me to the point of explosion...

1). Everyone knows someone who's owned an XY GT-HO...
It is amazing, even though they made 300 of them, and lets say 1/2 of them are gone/MIA/otherwise...
Despite the above two FACTS, everytime someone talks to me, they have an uncle, a cousin, a friend, the neighbors, SOMEONE who owned a legit XY GT-HO...
Enough... I hate those stories... I can't even pretend to be interested in them anymore... so if you've seen me and have told me a story... its not that i'm not sociable... I just don't care!

2). Don't TOUCH the car!!!
Why do people INSIST on touching the car...??? In reality, the only place your hands should touch on a car is the door handles, and the edges of the boot and bonnet... THATS IT!!!
Why do they have to touch, rub, lean, etc the car?? Is it a sexual thing?? Are they trying to seduce the car?? It annoys the hell out of me...
Takes a long time, and lots of TLC to keep original paint 'ORIGINAL' and one of the best ways is to keep GRUBBY HANDS off it!!!

So... a new sign will be made up for mine... (though its gonna be kinda long)...

Whilst i've never owned a classic worthy enough of others admiration, i have been on the other side of the coin, albeit whilst paying attention to someone elses vehicle.
I was doing a Hindly street run one night, stopped at the lights at the King william end macca's when a bunch of young fellas pulled up going the other way in a very nice VS ( i know, i know, no such thing, but it was tidy and sounded/looked hot) Anyway im looking at intensely when this tool in the back seat asks me what the F im looking at..

I turn to the driver, who was level with me and mention how he has a nice car, he must have spent heaps on and that it was a shame no one could admire it due to the wanna be in the back seat...

With that the driver turned round and sent his 'mate' walking, then appologised...lol

For the short period i had my Mk2 Escort i absolutely loved it. So many times, atleast twice a day i'd get toots and thumbs up. Once or twice a week i'd be regailed by middle aged blokes telling me they had one as their first car and did it up and used to thrash Toranas out street racing and all sorts of wild tales. It was great - its a great way to meet like minded people and other times they tell you they've got old parts for you or other things. I was given an old Lynx DCOE manifold for it for real cheap amongst other things people have gathered over the years.

I have owned the XK wagon for less than a month now, and I have had 4 old blokes (75+) just come up and start chatting away like we were long lost mates. They are pretty much harmless though, and always good for a proper conversation about old time cars.

Actually, you are spot on there! Everytime I fill up with petroleum the console operators comment on the colour. With all the admiration this colour gets, I don't think it would attract much more attention if I drove around with my wife in the passenger seat topless! (and my wife does have reasonable assets).

Back in the 95 - 2000 days when I had the XA fairmont coupe with all the goodies in it, I couldn't stop at a servo without someone of any age admiring it, wanting a photo of them in it, asking if it was for sale etc
This was back when coupe's could be bought cheaply.

Couldnt drive it anywhere without someone giving me the thumbs up. I guess the sound of a US 4V 351ci clevo with 500+ horses under the hood and twin 3 inch zorst, race cam and extractors would get their attention

Cant say the same about the AU XR. it gets some fans but the forte sure did get alot for the first four years. cause it was the first AU on the streets north of gepps cross. And it was like no other forte at the time. lower to the ground than a coke can and wicked stance and 50 extra kw and a great exhaust note

basically what the AU S would come to be in 1999 but in sep 98
