It's been shown that the photo was a joke and taken by one of the HWP officers involved, the car wasnt driven or used with P plates on it. There's also a fully marked HWP car right next to it that has been cropped out of the image.

The badges are also not changed, it is an XR6T and thus has those badges.

I'm not entirely convinced it was an actual P plate driver driving the vehicle.
The police basically said it's a disguise and they are allowed to do that to a speed detecting vehicle.
Surely they would have said the driver was still on his Ps as then it would be a non story.

I think the P plate was intentional and perfect bait for any cocky P plater trying his luck in a spur of the moment D measuring contest.

I've had an unmarked HWP car zoom up behind me, tail off, zoom up, tail off and then pull alongside me on the M1. Don't assume they always play fair. If I was still young I probably would have fell for it.

I would prefer them to bait the car by leaving it in a dodgy street and then whoever tries to badge, de rim, de brake, scratch it etc they get caught and heavily punished... Just my 2c lol

Back in the day there was an unmarked VN V8 Commodore driving around the NSW Central Coast with surf stickers on the back window and a surfboard on the roof.

I have personally seen a purple holden ss ute with peter steven motorcycle sticker on back window and red p plates displayed with a police officer driving it.This is illegal he was clearly not a p plater and yes it was a V8.He is from around Diamond creek ,Yarra ranged area and if I ever see him again I will be asking him some questions.

From the Highway Patrol Facebook page. Apparently it was a gag...

http://eftm.com.au/2017/04/calm-down...rol-cars-38298

byTrevor LongApril 18, 2017

There’s a lot of discussion online today about a NSW Police Highway Patrol car operating on P Plates – reportedly deceiving passers by using the P Plates to further mask an undercover car – and the media are creating a storm with it.

However, the stories are a long way from the truth it turns out – and rather than just reporting on a photo – EFTM actually spoke to the NSW Police about the photos:

Yes, there is an unmarked NSW Highway Patrol vehicle photographed with P plates on it.

Yes, these photos were uploaded to Facebook.

No, the photos were not taken by a “passer by”

No, the vehicle pictured – with P Plates on – was not*operational at that time.

You see, the NSW Police are pretty active on Social Media. *And they do a bloody good job at it – a mixture of humour and serious news is how the social accounts seem to spread their content. *Today though, no-one got the joke.

A Police officer thought it would be funny to put the P Plates on the car, Snap a photo, and post it to one of the many “Police in the area” Facebook groups that exist online. *Making the point that the Easter Long weekend double demerit period was still in force, and while the message certainly went viral, it has done so for all the wrong reasons.

If you look (not even closely) at the photo of the front of the car, you can even see a stationary marked Highway Patrol car off to the side.

The story here is not NSW Police using P Plates to trick motorists, the story here is that four people have died on NSW roads this Easter Long weekend, double the same period last year.

94 people have died on NSW roads this year, after a horrific total of 384 in 2016. *Out in regional NSW (the P plate photo was taken in Yass), 69 deaths, compared to the 25 in Metro Sydney.

Oh, and if you’re thinking young P Platers are*at the most risk – think again – the highest risk age group is 40 to 59 – the very same people teaching our kids to drive, and in many cases the very age group making more of this photo than is necessary.

Men outnumber women by more than two to one in road deaths, let’s focus on getting people to slow down and stay safe on the roads.

And for the record, the NSW Police do not use P Plates, Surf Boards or any other tricks to disguise Highway Patrol Cars. *But yes, you will see undercover Utes or even vans from time to time – they’re looking for the drug dealers, not people doing 20km/h over the limit.

Years ago I was driving along the highway in my modded xr6 turbo and an unmarked police f6 raced up from behind and was egging me on. He was about a car length behind and just booting it and then pulling up.

I didnt take the bait, I could also see their big box heads in the front seat pretty clearly. Eventually They just booted it straight past me and I waived.

It's a dirty tactic but if you Don't street race and you won't be caught.

Shouldn't they be setting a good example?

Ok, it's a big "hoorah" if they bait a naive driver into a race, but that doesn't make their actions mortally right.

I would rather see them doing/showing what is right and safe.

This certainly isn't a new tactic. 20 years ago I had a VR P plated Commode line up my XWGT at a set of lights and rip it when it turned green on Parramatta Rd. I've never been one to bite at a drag on a public street so I never took the bait.

5 minutes further down the road, I passed the same car - who had pulled over a Honda. Perhaps they couldn't resist the temptation.

As to whether it's right or not. I probably side more towards it being a valid tactic. Public roads aren't race tracks and if you're going to treat it as one with such little provocation, I'd rather you do it versus an unmarked cop car provided they immediately shut it down when it's obvious that the other party is engaging in a street race and not wait to see how far/fast they're willing to take it.

But police have special training so they can safely display P plates while on their full licence.

I have no problem with what they drive or whatever they do to try and fool us as speeding in some areas is just plain irresponsible.

About 5 years ago they were using a green VE SS Ute around Ryde and they were catching people who speeding along residential streets around the schools, shops and parks while taking short cuts off Victoria Road.

They had the full support of many of the local residents.

I had a same colour green Ute at the time and the locals would slow down when I came up behind them.
