Agreed- 4 door with space for the gear police need, big brakes, no doubt a good suspension and good steering. With the torque will be a potent package. With the diesel I wonder if they have the DPF sorted for regeneration- constable- Oh I had to give it a blast the regen light came on....yeah right..

And with the very high quality steel in the chassis rails will be safe- so a fit for purpose vehicle and safe for the police and members of the public- ie brakes, handling and if a crash occurs strength of body.

Seems to be at the mention of the police using anything but a falcodore causes people to loose common sense...

Obviously there is still a need for a largish sedan to replace the current HWP cars...and it just happens that other countries use cars other than falcodores too. They obviously do the job well, and in the case of the BMW, it comes with a factory police pack.

Then people harp on about the cost...quoting RRP or wahts found on car sales before ripping out the pitchfork. A bit of common sense will show that a police pack BMW will loose the expensive high-end stuff, and will have a cost based on a supply contract, void of tax...

So really...the cost's wont be too extravagant...

i actually see the bogan RWD lovers (like me) turning toward euro's like BMW and Merc, they are cheap second hand and if they become more common here parts may get cheaper and people may be more comfortable working on them.
so many times i have looked and BMW's for my cars but i walk way when i hear mechanical horror stories so i stuck with 2 falcons and 1 commodore
i had my eye on a 645 for $19k but got cold feet.

I've always contemplated an E60 BMW but couldn't stomach the price of adding power and even the V10 is rather underwhelming. If there would be a way to shoehorn a Barra turbo motor into it, then different story and would be a nice daily.

they wont be paying taxes so the core car will be cheaper than you expect.

And the residual will be better, so overall changeover costs will be higher in the conversion to 530d but reasonable thereafter.

Punters will lap them up at auction.

Yep here in victoria the police ramming state repair costs will be huge, yep police ramming has gone crazy here and it is normal for a crim to ram patrol cars,220 rammings of police in the last 18-24 months alone.

Wow- that is crazy.

Is it something in the water in Victoria, or just that the speed restrictions and overtly draconian traffic laws that the police are made to enforce by the fat pollies in Victoria have just made people mad and have a brain fade.

Or is it the Apex gang in Victoria that is responsible?

It is because out justice system keeps bailing out so called youth offenders 16-20 years olds over and over again and when they do go to court they are placed on community orders or bonds that they keep breaking so they know there are no consequences for there actions. Our premier voted down mandatory sentences for ramming of police cars just last month. There was a young guy recently that jumped up and down on a patrol car parked right out the front of a major police station and got a slap on the wrist even though he was on bail that he had already broken multiple times.

BMW is simply not value for money for the taxpayer. People are saying they're not that expensive as govt pays no tax/gets a better deal/buys in bulk and whatever. But it goes both ways - the cheaper models such as the Kia will also be even cheaper.

Victoria Police must be the worst law enforcement agency in the world to work for. Cant even pursue a fleeing vehicle anymore , the system is made out so that the fleeing criminal has a right to safety and if he gets away, then the cops have to call it off and the crim escapes to reoffend another day. Works ok if it's just a serial leadfoot on the highway with no regard for Mr. Plod, but if someone just done a robbery or murder, I don't think the victim would be too pleased at the outcome..

That law came in when my best mates sister was rammed and killed by a paddy van in a supposed pursuit.
Police bought it on themselves by abusing the privelige.

She was 19.

What luxuries? They're effectively bottom of the barrel stripped out base models for police cars. Effectively a factory police pack. It wouldn't even surprise me if they supply the cars as part of their authority vehicle line, therefore making a better deal.

Apparently BMW were the only ones with factory police pack which involves quite a few modifications to a retail car.

I still think they wont be that far removed from the normal Aus spec cars, I think this is them just trying to placate the public concerns about cost. For resale they cant strip them too much... but who knows.

Also Im pretty sure state governments pay luxury car tax, so it will stil be an expensive vehicle.

Npt just the purchase price of the initial car but the kitting out, whats a police car worth at the end?

SS Commodore police car - $120K or so?

When your base price vehicle goes from $40K-$120K and on a car which is a pain in the *** to work on as per all European cars.

I used to be an electrical engineer for BMW Aus, believe me there's a lot of modules and components that can be removed in "packages" from a retail car for a police vehicle which would reduce the cost pretty heavily. They still won't come in at SS pricing but a 530d retail price in Germany is $AUD70k. So there's a fair bit of play in it. Will tie in nicely the BMW police bikes.

Back in the late 80s/ early 90s The Victorian Police came close to buying a batch of E class mercs for HWY partrol duty. The cost per car came right down as no import duty, no luxury car tax, low spec etc etc.

They might not be re-sold at all, given that these are purpose-built, factory-integrated police cars. I think they're just going to be returned to BMW to be recycled.
