The wife has a new Rav4.
It's constantly returning around 5.8L/100km. The funny thing is, it's more economical around town. I guess if you drove at around 80, you'd improve things; but that's not me. By comparison, I would expect about 6.2 fom the TD Mondeo (Wagon) on a similar trip. We did look at the Outlander PHEV, but didn't think the price difference would pay off. The Toyota resale is remarkable, and their battery technology has over 20years of runs on the board.

I just replaced my BMW 530D with a new BMW i5 M60.
My findings..... 530D average was 6.4 l/100km over 50,000km. Say average was around $2 per litre for diesel - cost $6,400 in fuel over that distance. Lost around $60k in depreciation when selling it. I got a cracking deal on a Brand new (non demo) i5 M60.. RRP is $238k, but paid no where near that. In the deal i got free service, free public charging and a guaranteed buy back price in 3 years. My loss on purchase price will be around $40k (better than the 530d) Running cost for electricity would be $0 if i use public chargers. I don't, its not convenient for me so i got the 22kw home charger thrown in. I have 3 phase power at home, takes about 3 hours on averge every couple of nights to charge, if charging from under 10% to 100% it takes about 4 hours. Range is 520km, i won't ever to more than 250km - 350km in a day in this car. I am on an EV plan for electricity 8c per kw 12am to 6am. Car uses 18kw per 100km, charging is very efficient. to do the same 50,000km - It will cost me $700 charging at home. Saving me $5700. Its unlikely it will ever need brake pads as i mostly use regen braking - saves approx another $2000 over that distance on brake pads. No brainer. Less loss on sale, less running costs..... EV over Hybrid anyday if range is not a concern. Performance is stupidly good. 0-100 3.8seconds... Love my v8's (f150 and stang), but wow neither come close in terms of performance and refinement. In 3 years when my buyback comes up, i will look for another EV deal like this if i can get it. If it wasn't for the buy back gurantee - at this point i would be reluctant to buy an EV in the m60's price bracket. In the $70k range, i think your losses won't be much worse than the average ICE car.....

It would seem that diesels are ideal for fuel economy if there’s lots of highway running. If it’s mostly city stop go running then the petrol hybrid may be a better choice because of consistently cheaper fuel costs and no problems with diesel adblue and blocked cat converters. I guess it’s up to each buyer to work out where the sweet spot is for them and their budget. |
