Ok When I run a EA ECU in the car with my own power source to the fuel pump the car runs.

this would mean the wiring is ok.

Smartlock ECU vs Engine ECU = what one?

In the words of Doc Brown from back to the future...

IT WORKS! BWAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHHAHA! IT WORKS!!!

:party3: :party3: :party3: :1syellow1 :1syellow1 : :

There was a 20pin small connector at the top of the dash loom that was taped up. For some reason on the fairlane it wasnt connected. plugged it in on to the enginebay loom and it fired straight away!

YAHOOO!!!! Thanks to Karl (Nz) and steven (spope) for helping me nut the problem out

My conversion works fine, thank you very much. I remembered to plug everything in.

BTW, Mick, how many people have you had staring at workshop manuals? I reckon I have read the bloody smartlock section about 400 times now!

Lol this kind of hing happens to me every time. When i was putting the EF dash in mine, it sat in the garage for a month or two after i put it together but wouldn't start, looked at all the wiring and everything was plugged in. Eventually ripped the dash off to find that i had connected two plugs the wrong way around. I had essentially connected two seperate looms to themselves instead of to one another :P It is ALWAYS the silliest of things ;)

allows for higher rpm for starters (EDIT: i think? I have a feeling that EAs don't have rev limiters)... which might not be the best thing to do to an EA motor (unless it's fresh!)...

Yes dave you are right, the car does rev higher and easier now

Main Reasons for this...

1. My car had a CFI ECU loom originally, meaning i had house idle because the ISC didnt work correctly off the CFI loom.

2. No more random dash/headlight dimming when high ampage things are used such as amps, thermos, etc

3. I now have smartlock as the immobiliser, I will eventually upgrade to a Hornet Paging alarm but that will come later

4. Better fuel maps, Allows me to upgrade to a Tickford ECU later when I get a larger cam meaning I dont have to get a aftermarket chip

5. Better Fuel pump wiring. The ED wiring has a revision in the style of wiring and with that a better and less jumpy fuel sender

Thats my reasons for doing it so : Niko

Bingo! EB2 had revisions, voltages are much more consistent, due to better earths, higher capacity wires, better connections, etc...
Plus, with the install of smartlock, you have a LOT more flexibility with ecus - and EB2 and ED ecus are generally superior to earlier ecus as well.

You are such a girl. :P The more accurate fuel guage won't work unless you change the in tank sender unit, by the way.

The other major thing, certainly my main motivation, and I think for Mick as well, was to be able to have full fairmont electrics without all the extra wires. If you ever feel like seeing backyard wiring, take a look at the dash loom that I removed from the car.
With the Fairmont wiring, power windows, mirrors, trip computer and climate all just work, plus you have all the very nice features of the BEM, with the interior light delay and such.
