With trips consisting of 15kms only, it would take about 7kms for engine to heat up properly - all the while it is in rich mode, so uses more fuel. If it's stop/start driving, then yes you will chew more also.

In my AU XR8, I used to get around 420 average per 60 odd litres on petrol. MY AU I6 wagon gets between 420 and 500 on petrol, but that is a mix of city/highway, with some trips no more than 8 km each way, but others around 25 to 30 each way, on freeways/highways.

You should see anywhere between 13 and 16 l/100km on city cycle and still be "normal" - so for 400 km, you could expect to use anywhere between 52 litres and 64 litres. That's 12 litres difference, or $14 odd per tank. My advice - put the car in power mode, and drive it in 3 unless you go over 80, in which case shift up to D - just make sure you go back to 3 when going less than 80. Try it for a tank and see - I'm betting you will get better results.

Please define the number of litres you mean by "full tank". If you fill up when you should (ie at about 1/4 level), then you are taking only about 55 litres at a time (about $68 worth at 1.25 per litre), which for 380kms gives 14.5l per 100km. Well within the bounds of what is acceptable for an I6 auto. If you are using closer to 65 litres (ie completely filling up from almost bone dry) then you would be getting 17.1l/100km, which is NOT normal, even if driving in a spirited fashion.

As the name suggests they recondition engines... Perhaps you should contact AFF sponsors Jim Mock Motorsport and get your car tuned on the dyno

It is if you drive your car properly and keep it in tune and regularly serviced/maintained... That's just common sense stuff

I took it to Heathcote from Deer Park when it was stock as a rock, did 28 passes and drove home and to and from work for the next two days on a tank of Mobil regular unleaded

Your economy is crap. Mine - EB2 4.0lt, 4-speed auto, 68lt tank, 91 octane

Full exhaust and headers plus K&N filter and I get 530kms town and over 730 open road. The exhaust and filter was good for 50kms per tank! Well and truely paying for itself! As most good mods should.
Is your diff ration standard? what rpm are you doing at a 100kph? mines only pulling a lazy 1700rpm at 100kph.

How the hell can it be unhealthy for the fuel pump? It pumps the same ammount of fuel regardless of consumption.

Ill try this and see how i go, this wont put too much force onto the gear box will it, and also can i give it a alittle kick when its just in 3rd?

I've been able to get 600kms out of a tank, but a lot of that is highway/freeway driving (The fact that the cars sits on 1800rpm at 100km/h certainly helps the economy)

I think he means letting it get so low because it would start pumping all the crap on the bottom of the tank.

I'm with Matt. I have to give my 5.0 Ghia a REALLY hard time to get less than 350 a tank.

Yes a fairly obvious thing to those who are aware that you should NEVER let an EFI vehicle get lower than a quarter of a tank. For the above mentioned reason and also because they burn out.

You shouldn't do it in any car, it'll still pump crap into the fuel system.

(EL, Auto, V8) I get around 350-400 (sometimes over 400 ) kays to a tank This is partial hilly driving, occasionall cruise control + occasionall WOT.

All depends on how you drive, where you drive, and condition of the car..

My car sits in economy all the time also

Thanks Paul
you should be getting 450 - 500km/tank.

in-need-of-a-tune 5.0 + 4.11s = just short of 500kms/tank, mixed driving. You need some diagnosii happening ;)
