IT will be ok with two different tyres on rear but just to give you an example it will be like having two different shoes on your feet just not right and it wont feel right.

rears same patern L&R - fronts same patern L&R

Nah, what I meant was keep both fronts the same pattern and both rears the same pattern. Especially if you have a limited slip diff. Kind of common sense.

JC, looks like I stand corrected. That said, I'll check with a mate of mine, who did his traffic exam at the Police Academy 3 days ago, when he gets back to Sydney. Just because it doesn't say its illegal in your exerpt doesn't mean it doesn't say it elsewhere. However,

Looking at the context of the other text, it seems this includes the tread pattern. However, this cannot be determined for certain. Bring in the lawyer....
Either way, I don't think it is a good idea having different tread patterns and/or different tread depths on the same axle. Fair enough if your spare is different but I'd get the original repaired, or a matching tyre as soon as possible. In an emergency, I'd want all the grip and predictability I can get. And for the record, I have 4 almost new SP3000A's on my car with less than half a mm difference between the most and least tread depth.

I don't disagree that it makes sense to have the same tread patterns across an axle - all I'm saying is that it's not illegal not to. And actually, it's not even me saying it - it's the RTA and ADRs.

thats right as long as its the same size , width , series and type of tyre
it doesnt have to be the exact same tread so if you have two tyres 265/50/14
ones a slick n ones a wet weather they cant be run to gether (and befor some one says you cant run slicks just using it for comparison)
