lack off fuel would do that,so start at the pump and work your way forward,it has to be something simple..or at least i hope it is.

it deffinately has fuel at the rail. I'm gunna try another set of injectors tommorrow, do a compression test and move the dizzy around 1 tooth at a time. NZ has told me it should start even if the compression is very low.

Before doing too much more stuffing around I would get a nice charged battery (or jumper) and do a compression check. As long as you have atleast 75psi the car should start, assuming everything else is OK. Now 75psi is crap and it means your engine is seriously shagged but it will run. You want at least 120psi+ on these engines with a variation of no more than 10%.
Next would be pull the injector rail and check to see if a nice strong mist of fuel is apparent when cranking the engine. Now test ignition. Find TDC. You have a 50/50 chance of getting it right using the crank timing marks. Is the rotor pointing at number one spark lead. If not remove dizzy and rotate rotor 180 degrees and reinstall. If you follow this then engine must start, assuming no catastrophic ECU or mechanical failure. cheers Scott |

Deffinately has NO compression at all. That's exactly how my EF sounded when I left the shims in with a standard cam. Take the rocker cover off and see if the cam is turning, if not the little dowel pin on the cam gear has stripped.....done that before as well!!
Don't stress too much, it's not lack of compression because the motor is slapped out, I'd be willing to put money on it being something to do with the valves/cam.

After watching that vid again, it sounds like the cam isn't turning. It seems to be getting compressing on one or two cylinders, which would probably be the backfire type noise you're hearing.
My vote is the dowel in the cam gear is stripped.

well I changed the rocker rack in it but that's just bolts. Thanks for the suggestions guys, i'll pull the rocker cover off tommorrow and throw the battery from the EA in it. Where is this dowel that you speak of AUII_Forte ? at the back of the cam ?

im assuming the bit that sticks into the cam gear at the front to ensure the cam turns with the chain?

What I heard in that vid did not sound good at all. Definatly sounds like a lack of compression on a few cylinders. I dont think that it will be a fuel delivery related problem.
Have we ruled out the possibility of holes in the pistons? Sorry if you have mentioned this already, but do you know the history of this motor. It may be possible that the motor may have been run very lean and burnt through some of your slugs. Not a good scenario at all. But a possibility none the less. Do you have a borescope? or know someone who has one. It may be worth a look. Deformation of the pistons may account for the resistance when trying to crank by hand. Tho a more likely scenario is that some of your valves are staying open as someone has said previously. I hope that this is the case. Best of luck Mike

Damo have you mucked around the the dizzy anymore?
My ea sounded like that (slow cranks) but it was all timing related.............. Hope you get it sorted, you got enough helpers?

had a nother play around with it today. Pulled the fuel rail off and had mum crank it, fuel ИИИИed out of the reg but not the injectors. :S Something arked under the manifol too and the was smoke and ИИИИ and a big bang. :O
So i'm gunna pull the manifold off and check everything under enith it, change the fuel rail and injectors with a spare on i have. Also pulled the rocker cover off and the cam is deffiantely turning over and the dowel on the cam gear is fine. |

If you are not getting fuel out of the injectors check to see if the fuel hoses are the right way around. Fuel supply from pump goes into the rail, return hooks up to the regulator. It's a stupid thing but i've seen it happen before.

fuel lines are deffinately the right way around. Was one of the first things I checked. Hopefully once it's back together tommorrow i'll give it another shot and it might fire up.
I'm picking up another block tommorrow anyways, it's an EB block with AU crank, rods and piston, i'll send my head off for a clean up and bolt it to this. I still think i'll be able to get this 3.9 started but if not the 4.0 will go in and should be good as new. |

haha yeah the 4 litre blew a big chunk out of the timing case. It blew a fair bit of smoke anyway and wasn't worth repairing so a new motor was the best bet. If you look at my first post in this thread Bobby, there's a link to the thread when it blew.
I'm just glad I never sold my EA or else i'd be up ИИИИ creek without a paddle. I love my EA!!! <3 |

I'm gunna finish puttin the manifold back on soon, couldn't find anything out of place down there. Hopefully these other injectors will get it going. I don't like my chances though. |

Damn you got some bad luck Damo! Wish I could help ya mate.
Is your new block Hus's one? I don't like the chances of having compression in that one either :S Sundeep |
