Toyota is already hard at work evaluating a high performance version of the new Toyota GT 86 sporting coupe. Chief engineer Tetsuo Tada says that not only is a supercharged GT 86 envisaged, test cars have already been made and are being evaluated by Toyota Racing Developments, the Japanese giant’s in house tuning division.
Tada-san favours the supercharger approach because it is simpler to achieve than increasing engine size and doesn’t wreck throttle response as turbocharging might. Indeed Toyota says that turbocharging along with four-wheel drive and wide tyres are what make sports cars boring to drive.

Supercharging is also a key competence for TRD which has been offering this kind of forced induction as an aftermarket kit for Toyotas since 1998. He would not be drawn on what kind of power a supercharged GT 86 might develop but Toyota is known to consider the car’s chassis could easily handle an additional 50bhp to go with the 197bhp already generated by its Subaru 2-litre flat four motor, a view with which, having driven the car, we wholly concur. However he says the TRD is also looking at ways of modifying the suspension to cope with the extra power, raising the possibility of a still more substantial power hike.

TRD’s most popular supercharger conversion is applied to the American market Tacoma pick up, boosting its 4-litre V6 engine from 233bhp to 301bhp suggesting that a 280bhp GT 86 with, critically, a massive boost in the low down torque the car currently lacks would be easily achieved. Even in the unlikely event that all the modifications added 100kg to the weight of the car, its power to weight ratio would still at least equal that of the 326bhp Nissan 370Z, a car capable of hitting 62mph from rest in 5.3sec and recording a top speed of 155mph. The standard GT 86 needs around 6.8sec and does 143mph. It is not yet known whether, if approved, the supercharged GT 86 would be offered as an aftermarket pack or as a model in its own right.
Tada also confirmed that it was so important to his team that even the standard GT 86 drifted properly that special tests were incorporated into the car’s development programme specifically for this purpose, ‘the first time this has ever been done on any Toyota.’

I think they must have dusted off a section of the factory and discovered how they used to do things, as with the original AE86...either that, or as I said, they've come over all "old British sports car" and realisedwhat makes a car fun to drive isn't neccisarily outright power...
Sometimes Toyota does suddenly come over all radical and do something surprising and out of the ordinary. Take my 1982 Celica, the wedge-shaped hatch 3rd generation model that took over from the hugely successful earlier "rounded" shapes...they made a decision to go a whole different direction, and a big part of that was thier decision to make it so that no one on the design team for the new car was over 25 years old. It was a big step away from the "normal" way of designing stuff that Toyota did, and does now.

It's more a reflection of having a CEO take over the company who has a racing background and wants to inject some passion back into the brand. Plenty has been said about it with the 86, that and being that Toyota threw out their normal product development policies out for this car and went with what people said they wanted.

Speaking to mazda hq today the ft sounds as though its put the cat amongst the pigeons as far as the mx-5 is concerned.
If only they would drop a rotor into an mx-5.

The RX8 SP turbo factory engine (that was used in the Targa last year) would be fun in an MX5.

The engine in that thing is a total disappointment ... they could have at least fitted a 1.6ltr turbo motor in there ...

Weight wise its absolutely nothing special ... if it was well under a ton then i guess their argument would stand a better chance ...

An FT86 with the ISF V8 in it - now that's an interesting car. An ATMO 2L with no torque doing 0-100 in 8 seconds does nothing for me. Especially when it's rumoured to cost around $35k!

Exactly ... instant torque is where it is at ... a small turbo would be fun .... but there'd be times were lag would not be fun.

Hmm...0-100 in 8 seconds. Somewhere I've got a copy of a Wheels or Motor magazine from many many moons ago that proudly boasts a 5 liter V8 Brock SS Commodore cracking 8 seconds for the zero to one hundred...

How our expectations have changed. There are other engine options than the old boring "drop a V8 in it!" philosophy...
This car also isn't about 0-100 speeds or quarter mile times...it's about a pleasant driving experience, not outright power...and seeing the way law enforcement is getting tighter and tighter each year, people might just go for a car that handles great and gives you a nice drive at or under the speed limit...

But "THIS" car (the Max Orido Drift test vehicle) is about plenty of torque low-down for controlled lack of traction and drifting ... something the stock engine may be OK at depending on track and tyres used.

But for the Application shown above ... the V8 is the much better option.

Yes, I understand the philosophy behind the car and what it's intended for. But, it's not unreasonable to want decent performance from your $35k coupe. If you're buying one of these as your every day car, you will very quickly tire of having to rev the thing to 6,000rpm every gear change to get some torque, and if you're buying it as a car to blast through the hills, or take to the track, well I could think of at least 8 or 9 cars off the top of my head that would be better suited to the task, for much less money, that make much more power and torque, and handle just as well, if not better.

If only Toyota weren't hamstrung by the ****** boxer engine from Subaru. I would of liked to of seen a direct injected, turbo version of the 1.8L engine from the Corolla maybe. I mean, Toyota made 140kW from that engine in NA form years ago even without the use of direct injection.

I can see the appeal of the car, don't get me wrong. I just wished they did better with it, because there's a lot of other cars out there for cheaper, that go harder, and handle just as well, that will be cheaper.

What's wrong with the Subaru engine? They're great for weight distribution, light, flat and sit low in the engine bay. The engines also make a decent amount of mid range torque for their displacement.

Okay... They're not light and they don't make good torque anywhere. I've seen heaps of Best Motoring tests, testing the old 2.5 STi engine against the 2L Evo engine, from just off idle and mashing the go peddle. The Evo came on boost sooner and stronger.

They are able to be slung low down in the engine bay to offer a low centre of gravity. That's about it.

Im booked in for a test drive in three weeks.

I really am looking forward to seeing what this car can deliver.

I am thinking back to what the last of the honda integras were selling for, same for the prelude, the probe, the cougar, celica...... you name it. As far as I can remember they werent cheap cars at all, around 40k werent they?

If I am thinking correctly, it makes the 86 look a bit like a bargain in comparision to what came before it.

Agree i own probe and celica really fun to drive. Probe was about 50k new.
