Default Pinging

Just bought a XR8 Rebel 220 with 98k on the clock. When giving it WTF it makes a noise like pinging. In other threads, others make mention o2 sensors, dirty injectors, AF sensors etc.

Can any of these cause pinging? Any other suggestions!

Another one, whatever you do as long as it is pinging DO NOT give it to it. You will kill your engine, I know as I did. It could be a wide variety of things but first I'd be checking Fuel (Some 220's will only run on 98ron), Fuel filter and then oxygen sensors. Just don't drive the car unless it's you really need to or it could cost you big $$$. On the upside if you do drive it and kill the engine it's a great excuse to go a stroker...

bad fuel, you should be running it on at least premium ulp, drain the tank, or add an octane booster

Was gonna suggest fuel. What fuel are you running i ran normal ulp and it pinged its head off now run 95 or 98 and its fine

Grab a can of CRC CO contact cleaner (electrical parts cleaner) remove the airflow meter and give it a good spray. Dirt build up on the airflow meter will be a given and the engine doesn't get the full amount of fuel injected for the volume of air entering.

mmm..I always keep a bottle of octane boost in my boot for mine, it rattles at the first sign of fuel less than 98 ron .. and has done sice new (side note :: I wont use Optimax either it has to much Variation from servo to servo : )

mine was pinging for a while and i have never put less than 95 ron in my car, so i took it in to ford, they said they gave the throttle body a clean and re-programmed the ecu and it went away.

I should have stayed with my XR6T. Besides my personal reasons for selling it, I was sick of it being temprementle. Hot weather loss of power, run like a pig if you got some slightly off fuel, pinging due to above reasons. Least when it wasn't suffering from the above, it went it like a dog with a backside full of rock salt! I thought being the old trusty Windsor all this crap would be gone. Boy am I a misguided SOB! :togo:

In my opinion you are correct, I find the 220's very temperamental, moody actually if that makes sense.

They are a demanding car with bad manners, especially manuals but I like them, gives a car character I guess, also as recommended above, probably safe to stick with 98ron.

Very good description!!!!!!! Mine is a manual also. I have only ever ran Ultimate 98, but some here don't like that either. Vortex 98 seems to be well respected, but limited outlets here in Newcastle.

Can't comment on Ultimate Rebel as I never use it, tend to stick with either Vortex 98 or Shell 98, no probs so far with either.

Hope the pinging sorts it self out and you get to enjoy your vehicle, they despite their idiosyncrasies are a great ride imo, not as refined like your T was but a lot of fun, very old school in some ways, my windsor and me are still :

I share your pain! Mine is an I6 which is supposed to have a knock sensor to eliminate the problem. (apparently). It does run better on 98 octane as nothing under 95 has ever gone in. It is not plugs or filter in my car & engine compression is the same. I hope this thread finds the solution!

When giving it what the ******? Pretty sure thats spose to be WOT right?

As most have said its probably just bad fuel or something. Hopefully nothing happens because of it!

unfortunately mine has started pinging again, i had a look at my air filter and its dirty as, i'll clean it, as it is a bmc filter and it looks quite dry, along with my throttle body, as it is pretty dirty as well, and hopefully it goes away before the weekend as i'm supposed to be draging it at the aff day.

ive had mine for well over 18 months now and have only had it ping once. the reason for this was as nearly everyone has said bad fuel! the wife takes ot to work and it comes back running like @#$! but it has a full tank of fuel. she put normal ulp like what she runs in her series 1. No need to worry she promises never to do it again!

My old EB 5L used to ping, had a freshly built motor and pooload of other new bits and pieces. Only solution was to back the timing off a couple of degrees.

Then I sold that and got a EL 5L, same problem :( After doing numerous things here and there I ended up changing the MAF sensor recently and it's gone now.

Just take it to Ford and get 'em to put the Code checker thingo on it.

Why not get an edit so it runs on ULP? Will only cost you around $1600 for a custom tune, and at 10c per litre cheaper, it will only take you 16000litres, or roughly 100,000km to make that money back, but it will save your engine from premature detonation.

I've had Ford service look at it, and they say it is not pinging. They say it is too rythmic. They are confident it is lifters and that I should run a engine flush in the oil, than change the oil and filter. After about 1,000k's change oil and filter again. They are also recommending 10w30 oil. Do you guys agree?

I've just had an independant mechanic look at this noisey, and he is saying it wont be a lifter. Sticky lifters etc are generally noisey at start-up or idle not at high rpm.

He is saying that it is the timing chain! It has done 99,000k's. Does the timing chains in these have any issues?

Never heard of a timing chain having issues in one of these, after 40 odd years you'd think Ford would have ironed out an issue like that. 10w/30 oil sounds too light, I use Nulon 15w/50 fully synthetic and it's good stuff. What area do you live in?

this is the most common cause ^^^^

2nd most common cause is water in fuel (500ml of metho will fix)
bad 02sensor should throw an error code

While talking about pinging - the I6 is meant to have sensors that stop pinging right? Cos when I go up hills sometimes, and when I accelerate as hard as possible without making the auto drop down, I get a sound thats worryingly similar to pinging. Maybe its just something loose in the engine bay rattling?

I know this is kinda stoopid!!! but how does one tell for sure it is pining?

The tl makes what i call the throttle body rattle or something to that effect when i am taking off HARD!!! and i am over it..

Only happened since G&D have tuned it?

Best you take it back there and while its making that sound DONT thrash it, get them to check it out.
