Default Front tyres chewing out plastic inner guards

I've got a problem with my ute.
I had factory XLS wheels with 215/60R16s on them, never had a problem with them eating the plastic inner guards.

I've now got FG XR6 wheels with 235/50R17s on them and they have eaten the front of the inner plastic guards.

Does anyone know how I can fix this issue...? I believe my ute came factory with 215/55R16s which would directly equal 235/45R17s.
Would putting the 235/45s on stop this eating of the guards?
Keeping in mind I need two new tyres soon, but I would still have the 235/50s on the back, Can I do this?

235/45R17 is the closer to the right size I think. THe others will probably fit on the back but they muck with your ABS system due to different wheel speeds. Probably best to get them all changed to the right size...

I don't have ABS so that's not a drama. I see your point of changing all four tyres, but the good ones are quite new (never roaded when I purchased the wheels)

Maybe I'm missing something here, but the issue is likely more to do with the extra 20mm in width.
You have only increased you overall diameter by 2.4mm, but you have brought the inside edge of the tyre further inboard due to the increased width.

http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html you can use this link to play with tyre size comparisons.

Just to add aswell, when I bought it, it had 18 inch wheels with 235/40R18s so I am stumped

If it helps. The 18s were 18x8, 35mm offset
These 17s are 17x8 with 36.5mm offset
XLS 16s are 16x7 with 38.5mm offset

The 18's were sitting 1.5mm further out towards the guards and were also 23mm smaller. So quite different really.

Do you have any pictures of where it is rubbing?

If it were me I would use the 235/50/17 on the rear and get the correct size for the front. Then eventually get the correct size all around.
