In a fragmented market with 64 brands and full size sedans not being as sought after as they once were, anyone expecting the VF to reverse any "sales slide" of large cars is kidding themselves.
Stop the decline, maybe, but reverse it?? I don't think so!

Sales figures for both Falcon/Terri and Commodore/Cruze are meaningless now.
Here's to another sordid year for Australian manufacturing! Goodbye Toyota! Cheers! |

Falcon and territory sales are not meaningless from where I stand. And all the best to Toyota, hope you stay.

Once we remove the carbon tax, boat people, mining tax and introduce full paid maternity leave, Toyota will be safe. Oh oh, I'm getting to political. Sorry to even it up 7 years of Labour government has caused this!

Politics aside, it speaks volumes when a government will not even sit down and engage with the industry even though they (the industry) are willing and wanting to.
What other country/state would give a big F YOU to a company(s) that supports thousands of jobs and economic activity? I can see the government having exactly the same attitude towards Toyota as they had when they drove Holden out. |

Holden supposedly committed to Aus for another 10 years in 2012 in return for a $275mil injection of funds. Only 18mths later, they had their hands out wanting that figure increased to $500mil. It was a game of economic chicken. And you wanted the taxpayer to keep caving? |

Of course. But the main point is, there is no one root cause of the collapse of our car making industry, it is because of a number of factors in play both historically and now.

If we stopped the boats in time, all would have been fixed earlier.
Okay last political comment, promise!

What this is preposterous!
Holden are the best marketers in Australia! They always do sponsorships advertising for the commodore........I know what'll fix it, more advertising and spend more money on tv ads for the commodore. Advertising always works to get sales, its the ultimate answer. Ford....pfffttt, they never do advertising for the falcon....why they dont, i wouldnt have a clue, ford marketing dont have a clue..... FYI im being sarcastic |

let the 'boat people' in. If, as we are lead to believe, they are economic refugees rather than the other type, allow them to stay on the proviso they buy one local made car per model cycle.
Bigger population to sell to cant be bad. Oh and we might get some nice new cuisine too. JP |

Interesting. The sales slides almost coincides with the introduction of the HFV6 engine (Alloytech) from the VZ. The 3.6 engine is such a let down.

Remember though, Holden is 'here to stay' and the Chinadore... sorry, Commodore, will still be built, just not here
Its unfortunate for the workers here, but what can we do? :( That being said, if the sales continue to plummet the way they are, they may only end up selling for the small car sector (which isnt really all that good imo)

Wouldn't an all of a sudden miracle be nice?
Petrol goes back to 98c a litre & as a result large car sales almost instantly go back to 2003 levels. Ahhh one can only dream Sorry for o/t.

So when did they realise that Falcons were rubbish....at the start of the AU when Falcon's numbers started dropping? People moved on cause modern cars are much better then they were in the 90's and most of these cars sold today are fine for them even if you wanna hang yourself being in for an extended period of time.

Once again, "not building what people want"...
The public has shown that it doesn't want large sedans anymore, not in sustainable, profitable numbers. V8's are meaningless to all but a vanishingly small number of enthusiasts...no one buys a V8 to "tow a horse float or a big boat or caravan" anymore...they buy four wheel drives for that. Holden and Ford have been affected by something that overseas makers have been stung with many times over the years: not seeing which way the wind was blowing when public buying trends changed in large scale ways. Commonest cars on the road now are twin cab utes, mid sized and smaller SUV's, and small and medium cars. That seems to be what people mostly want to buy. Buyers are also way less "badge blind" than they used to be...people are far less likely to buy just one make (and maybe only one model from that make) year after year, feeling they need to be linked to that maker because they always drove one and daddy always drove one. Potential buyers are also probably way better informed now than they ever were...people ask questions, the check reviews online, they research, and realise they don't have to be tied down to one model from one maker, and the car makers didn't see this coming. Too many people also think that the majority of the motoring public...which is what makers rely on to sell profitable volume...are in any way interested in which end of the car is doing the driving, what the 0-100 time is, and what sort of a quarter mile time it will do. Good old boring Toyota realised long ago that if you give people "a car" that is reliable, does everything it says on the box, and just provides a good service to it's buyers in a no-fuss way, that people will buy them in droves, even if they aren't all that "exciting" or "fun" (86 excluded). Maybe the death of Falcon and Commodore is a sharp wake up call to the industry, that they have to look closely at what people want rather than try to dictate to them what they should want, when that car doesn't meet their needs or wants anymore. |

It isn't just that large sedans fell out of favour. For the most part, there were no alternative large RWDs from each maker, so it was worth the investment to make them while the market wanted them. Once the market moved to SUVs and smaller 4cyls, each manufacturer already had cars in their range to cover these, so little justification to build here. Territory only got the nod because of platform sharing with the Falcon, no way it would have been developed if it didn't.
Arguably, this bought a lot of time for Ford and I cant help but wonder what the situation would be for Holden if they'd followed suit and built an actual SUV off the Commodore platform (instead of the half arsed 4wd Commodore wagons)..... Last edited by AU1XLS; 10-01-2014 at 02:00 PM. |

That fuel price wouldnt get me into a falcon or a commodore or any big car. Probably not much would.
