It's a shame that big companies don't do the "right thing" and support the workers (lower/middle class), despite getting larger profits they feel the need to cut jobs. The share holders get richer and the people without jobs continue to struggle.

Yeap, its absolutely ridiculous that shareholders who own the company should be allowed to seek more efficiencies from their own business.

BP has recently done the same thing. Closed refineries and gone through all the dead wood in the company. Global Financial crisis has hit all of us harder than we had realised.

They are doing the right thing. This is hardly a great business. They had approx. $24 billion in sales and are gonna be lucky if they achieve a $250 million profit, ie they may make a profit of 1 cent for every $ they sell. Additionally they are making 10 cents for every dollar of assets they have. Its hardly a business that anyone would want to reinvest money back into. They have to run efficiently as they can, or they either go out of business, or raise their refining margins further (ie increase fuel prices). If it werent for the likes of caltex continually getting crappy returns on the money they invest, we would be importing a hell of alot more refined fuel into the country.

What a breath of fresh air, someone who understands business realities unlike some who think their primary role is as employment agencies...

At least a certain political party and their supporters will be over-joyed - as another evil polluting industry closes up in mainland Australia. Mission accomplished again!

With refineries closing operations in Australia, will that make our petrol at the pump better quality or worse?

I guess I want to know if the refinement process overseas with our trading partners is better or worse? particularly for the higher grade (98) petrol.

Eventually the "share holders" will be super rich but wont last as there will be limited buyers of their products/services as they simply cant afford it..

Joolz, if you are a superannuation contributor, YOU are most probably one of the "super rich" shareholders.
Everyone seems to automatically assume that these companies are only benefiting Toorak sociallites, when in fact it's the average Joeblow

I may be wrong, and I get that you're an accountant or similar and understand "business realities". But at the end of the day what happens when people cannot afford the product because they are unemployed? It may be extreme and a long way down the track.

BP still has a refinery in WA , which is the largest in the country. One of the few refineries in the world including the USA with approval to supply fuel to California due to the low sulphide fuels produced.

This is 350 jobs in ADDITION to the jobs going at the Refinery.

For all we know the 350 they mention in this article are probably casual kids who work 8 hours a week after school

Sorry, rather Uni students is probably what I should have said. Point still stands, the jobs going are more than likely the casuals.

Thats better! Ye you are probably right about the casuals? Lets hope its not management/normal worker jobs being slashed.

Casuals...You really have no idea.
Caltex is not Coles.
These people are full time employees who for the most part, have not just lost a job but have lost the ability to work in a specialised industry that they have been in their whole lives.

When is the last time you went to a servo, be it Caltex "Starmart" Shell/Coles Express, BP or the like?
They essentially are a Supermarket, and they do employ Casuals, my younger brother being one at Caltex in Murdoch.

You must be referring to the people who are losing jobs at the Refinery.
These 350 jobs have nothing to do with the Refinery..
