Exclamation Camry Dashboard Melts in Qld Heat!!!

"It was so hot this week Queensland has created a new measure of temperature – dashboard-melting hot.

On Tuesday, car detailer Wayne Phillips took this photo of a Toyota Camry's dashboard that had melted under the extreme daytime heat.

In his eight years of operating Wayne's Mobile Car Care, Mr Phillips said it was the first time he had seen a car get that hot.

Wayne Phillips from Wayne's Mobile Car had a melted dashboard to deal with this week due to the hot weather.

"I was in shock, I'd never seen it before.

"I've come across consoles get sticky to touch, but this is the first time I've seen a dash melted and look like it was liquid," he said.

"My young offsider who was cleaning the car at the time, put his finger into and pulled it out, it went grey from the colour of it.

I often tell people that when we get into cars they are incredibly hot and sometimes we have to open all the doors and windows

"In my eight years of doing this, I've never seen anything like it and I don't know anyone who has." He said detailing cars was hot work this time of the year, but seeing a melted dashboard took the cake.

"It was definitely unusual, but the weather this time of year is insane," he said.

"I often tell people that when we get into cars they are incredibly hot and sometimes we have to open all the doors and windows before we can get in and clean them."

Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Doug Fraser said the hot weather had been blowing from the inland, increasing temperatures into the high 30s and low 40s across the region.

"We are seeing westerly winds that are keeping things fairly dry, but at the same time, bringing all that heat off the land through the region," Mr Fraser said.

"Over the next couple of days we should see improving conditions, particularly into Sunday and Monday. We should get a south-easterly change working its way into the area ... we could see more shower activity going into Monday and make things a little bit cooler."

He said the slight reprieve should start rolling in by Saturday, although it would still be warm.

"We're expecting 36C tomorrow, and a little bit cooler on Saturday and Sunday at 33C, but it's still a bit hot," Mr Fraser said.

"The humidity will build a bit over the weekend, but at the same time the atmosphere will get a bit more stable ... which could lead to more showers."

Looks like it happened in Townsville.

Always wondered what the melting point for a dashboard might be - guessing around 90 degrees?

Also would be interesting to know if a dash mat or window shade would have made much difference in that environment?

Wow, I wonder what other cars that could be affected like this since most car interiors are plastic these days.

I would say a dash mat would be a great investment for protection, sunshades will be handy in these hot environments.

It's not new for Camry's
I bought a new one in 1995 the so called wide body model and there was a problem with melting dashes on Camry's back then.
Got to wonder if the generous amount of product on the dash helped it along?

If you can get that dash from 0-100 kph in around 5 seconds, the airflow should have a de-melting effect...

It was 39 in Townsville last Wednesday. But the heat factor was 45. I wound the window down in the truck, and pictured myself burnt to a skeleton.

a point to ponder...
why didn't the xd falcon all black dash assembly melt or crack
now while there may have been a few that have deformed
considering the colour its a wonder that the xd dash assembly
just didn't curl up and fall to the floor

Ive seen I30 and Elantra dashes start to melt last year when it was 39 degrees in Canberra.

One was brand new and you could see the plastic fumes coming out of the dash which was fogging up the windscreen.

Sunscreen across the windscreen and the front two windows down even 5mm makes a noticeable difference inside the cabin on hot days.

Just a little hint, there is a silent recall for camry dashes that warp or become sticky. talk to your local dealer and just check, might get a new dash.

I find it funny when people say 38 isn't hot. Has anyone been in 38-45 degree heat in 100% humidity? It is easily the hottest environment to work in when humidity is high and temp is around 40. I have worked in dry 52 degree heat for a long period and i'll take that any day rather than Darwin or Townsville 40 degree days with 100% humidity.

I remember getting into my old BAXR8 with leather when i used to work in Townsville, i dont know how the whole interior wasn't warped. I used to have to run it for a few minutes with aircon on before i could sit down.

As a Victorian who has recently moved up north all I can say his that the majority of QLD'ers love a whinge.

Its really not that hot...yes its as humid as hell but there are many parts of Australia, including Tassie, that gets hotter.

I have been wanting to say that for ages.

Its not a camry specific issue , seems to be related to Toyotas in general across models and years and extends to Lexus...

I lived in Melbourne for 20 years, and there is no way it is anywhere near as hot as the far north. I love Melbourne and love being back down south in Canberra. After working in the far north heat for 9 years i was so ready to get away from it.

Playing cricket in melbourne on a 42 degree day i never had any issues. Playing cricket on a 38 degree day in Townsville the morning after the nightly rain and it's unbearable on the field. You literally melt

Its clever engineering. Whilst you're paying attention to the very obvious dash melting problem thats very visible and in your face every day , owners are oblivious to the 300 other problems the car has.....

Wait til they get their dashes fixed, they'll then realise the rest of the car really is a POS.
Well until.you mash the pedal of course and it rips off those epic 5 sec 0-100 sprints.

Weve had it fairly hot in Adelaaide this summer, extended periods over 38*

The missus has a Camry, sits in direct sun at work all day.

We found this really cool dark coloured plastic film **** which sticks to the inside of the windows that keeps it cool, that and a piece of moulded carpet on the dash, works a treat.

Spread the word around, if ya park ya car out in the sun all day, buy some of that fancy film **** and a bit of carpet, its that easy, no serious, it will take off i tell ya.
Im even thinking of starting up a business, 'keep ya bus cool' im gonna call it. Ill market it to car dealers for fitment to customers with enough coin/common sense to buy it...

Melbourne yesterday 42.7°C... I'd be guessing Camry's dashboards would be slowly flowing out the fresh air vents?

First bolt-on for me with any new car is a dash mat.

These are my thoughts, seems very convenient that a car being detailed gets a melted dash. I'd say its his excuse to not admit fault for using a product which may have caused or contributed to this happening.

A car being detailed would have been sprayed with water when washed (a proper detailer wouldn't wash out in the sun either), doors would have been left open while detailing the inside of the car, sprays would have been applied to the dash - in other words, all things which would have kept the car cooler than one just parked in the direct sun, doors shut and no water sprayed onto it. So really, any Camry in that area which wasn't used that day should have an even worse melted dash?
