2018 Ford Mustang GT Runs 11s in the Quarter-Mile With 25 more horsepower and a new 10-speed automatic, the new Mustang GT does 0-60 in under four seconds. http://www.roadandtrack.com/new-cars...-quarter-mile/ By Chris Perkins Jan 5, 2018 The Hot Rod gang clocked a time of 11.83 seconds at 119.51 mph. That was the best time of the day, but the guys report that the Mustang GT consistently posted high-11s with ease. The test vehicle was a brand-new, bone-stock Mustang GT equipped with the optional 10-speed automatic transmission and the Performance Package, which brings 460 horses, 420 lb-ft of torque and sticky Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S tires. That's an improvement of 25 horses and 20 lb-ft over last year's model. This test was performed on a prepared surface and with optimized tire pressures—26 psi for the rears and 45 psi for the front. None of that is trickery. Theoretically anyone can buy a new Mustang GT, head straight for a drag strip, play around with tire pressures, and match Hot Rod's results. The Mustang offers launch control, which holds the vehicle at an RPM of the driver's choice. Hot Rod found that a 2000 RPM launch after a quick tire-warming burnout produced the best results. Let's put that 11.83-second run into context. The last Mustang GT we got test numbers on, a manual-transmission 2016 Performance Package making 435 hp, ran a 13.2-second quarter-mile. This is the first year for the new 10-speed automatic, and the first time the Performance Package can be ordered with the auto; our colleagues at Car and Driver managed a 13.0-second quarter-mile in a non-Performance Mustang GT with the old six-speed auto back in 2015. And how does the new 10-speed auto compare with the manual? Car and Driver recently did instrumented testing on a manual-transmission 2018 Mustang GT Performance Package and saw a best quarter-mile result of 12.6 seconds at 115 mph. So, the facelifted 2018 Mustang GT is significantly quicker than its predecessor, and if you want to dominate at the drag strip, you'll need the auto. Now just imagine what the rumored 2019 GT500 will do. |

They've done their homework that's for sure. That car/engine is so refined and it sounds like a weapon. And those are serious 1/4 mile times from that motor - it's a naturally aspirated 5.0L right?
Seen this on Jay Leno's Garage, or one of his other shows. Obviously not stock and different model but you get the picture: The GT500 is going to be a monster, it will surprise many. |

Cant believe I am going to say this but its going to get to a point where the performance gain will negligible or not worth talking about. Its crazy times for a stock mustang.
Im also hoping there will be focus on other areas, for me we are getting to a point where all this power great but the $$ would be better put elsewhere. It does pain me to say that BTW.

How would just 25 more horsepower equate to a drop in time of 1.4s down the 1/4 mile??
Tyre pressures?, good driver?, new launch control?, new auto? - I wish I could just drop a new auto gearbox into my car and do an 11.8..

the engine now revs to 7500 rpm, that add a lot of performance. More torque through the entire rev range means she pulls hard all the way. Watch the attached video and you'll see why many will want a new one... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y4aVinzv9W8 Last edited by jpd80; 07-01-2018 at 08:20 PM. |

Looks like a significant performance jump on the previous model...when are they going to be available in Australia?

Amazing. Not that long ago a 13 second stock car was something to write home about. Now a bog stock factory car pulls 11 seconds. Only funny thing would be hearing so many gear changes going down the quarter, much like a fast and furious movie scene

You might be right, as the Ford website says:
Estimated Curb/Kerb Weight of the 2017 Mustang GT automatic fastback - 3733lbs or 1693Kg https://www.ford.com/cars/mustang/20...s/gt-fastback/ Estimated Curb/Kerb Weight of the 2018 Mustang GT automatic fastback - 3733lbs or 1693Kg https://www.ford.com/cars/mustang/mo...mium-fastback/ |

I saw some early stuff where it was running mid 12's on bitumen. It's party trick then was 3.8s 0-100. I want to see a manual run, that will tell a story.

Not to dis the 2018 Mustang in any way because it is seriously fast, but I suspect a similar to Dodge Demon scenario here with extreme track prep, an ultimate traction 9.65 quarter but in the hands of Joe public struggling to run under a 10.
Time will tell as more are run down the track. Cheers Mick |

Thats incredible. Actually has me questioning my manual only obsession.
Also makes me a bit sad. Keep wondering what the Falcon could have evolved into.... I think a lot of the local supercharger conversions were still only getting into the low 11's with the current GT. Having driven one, it was terrible at getting power down even with stickty wide rear tyres. Is there other driveline improvements with the 18 stang?

Regardless of the track prep, the mph is impressive for the n/a 5.0. For a higher revving engine like that the 10 speed must do a good job of keeping it in the upper end of the power band.

The Sport pack is now available on the Auto, it changes the standard GT's 3.15 LSD to a 3.55 LSD, along with better suspension and wider, stickier Sport Cup Tyres. A stock GT auto with 3.15 gears would probably still run mid 12s for the 1/4 mile. Quote:
The manual now get a better shifter, better clutch and a new close ratio manual gearbox with a taller 3.0:1 first and 1;1 fourth gear. The Standard GT now get a 3.55: LSD while the Sports Pack includes the 3.73 LSD as before. The difference is that the close ratio box makes the car feel like it has 3.15 gears in the diff - a reason why the 0-60 mph is the same as the 2017 GT Sport Pack. After 60 mph, the car really get going and by the end of the 1/4 mile, it gaps the older car by between 0.4 and 0.6 seconds and 2.6 seconds faster to 150 mph. Not to dis S/C Miami Falcons but perhaps the Atmo Mustang is a lot easier to launch and keep stuck to the track, using all of that 7500 rpm is so important to a good time. Won't be long and the 'murricans will stick some 3.7s or even 4.11 in the Auto just for kicks..... Last edited by jpd80; 08-01-2018 at 03:40 PM. |

Yet another 5.0 thread where I dream about dropping that engine in a BF XR8.

Except for rare duck 3.3 V6,
Every F150 is now fitted with a 10R80, they sold around 60,000 of them in December alone Only be a few years and there will be plenty of these new engines and gearboxes being imported. Sure some will be EB 2.7 and EB 3.5, but plenty of the truck 5.0s are being sold too. |

I think there's enough change in the new car to pull Aussie buyers back to the showroom but time will tell...
or maybe someone with access to 2018 order bank can shed some light on early bird bookings.. |

The 2018 Mustangs look pretty damn impressive with basic mods. 11.2 with E85 tune, simple x pipe exhaust mod and drag wheel / tyre combo

Nope the slow manual would do me just fine, actually preferred! Install the MY18 spec 5.0 with the standalone kit and a manual and happy days. Surely a T56 or 6060 with the bellhousing from a FPV 5.0 would work? But yes all dreams.
Im converting slowly to the MY18 look, I too think its fresh enough to keep the tide going. Now with the added power it wont have many excuses.

Same compression ratio as the GT350's Voodoo motor, so probably making closer to 500hp from the factory.
I'm curious if that 10-speed trans is actually any quicker because while the closer ratios keep the motor in the sweet spot, you're still losing milliseconds in the the extra gear shifts. Makes me wonder if that's why the Camaro ZL1 1LE set it's Nurburgring time using a 6-speed manual ?....
