I'm looking around at a potential purchase of a weekender at the moment.. and one car that I'm looking at a little is the EL GT.
There's approx 11 of them for sale at the moment on carsales one for as cheap as $29k and the most expensive is $100k with only 208kms on the odometer. Will these continue to build more equity, or not? The car itself is... dividing, I guess. Polarising in its looks, most people probably might have been on the negative side of opinions. Me personally, I think it looks great and having owned 2 EL's, I've always had a thing for the EF/EL shape. The power, too, at 200kw is... not mouth watering. Will modifying it hurt its value too much?

Modifying will affect its value but no reason you couldn’t “build” a motor and keep the original in a tea chest.
Do I think an EL GT is worth between $29k and $100k? Not on your life! But then it only takes someone (or 11 someone’s) to want one badly enough for those prices to be relevant and realistic.

Get an insurance quote before buying. Some of those body kit parts will be near on irreplaceable these days and there is no accurate aftermarket options.

Buy it and enjoy it if it floats your boat. I reckon theyre a great car.
If your buying for equity and price appreciation, forget it. The price you buy it for is likely to be the price you sell it for again. No different to B and F series GT’s..... price neutral.

I'd go an eb gt or ed xr8 sprint over an el. Same power, but in my opinion stronger history and importance as far as modern muscle goes. Also look way better. T3 TS50 would be another option.

Even only driving on the weekend, you don't want to be "scared" to drive it, I always preferred a car without the body kit and the lower ride height just so I don't have to nurse it around through car parks etc, but as a highway cruiser why not. Be interesting to know if the 208km car gets lubricated or when

If a vehicle is originally marketed as limited edition or collectable it usually never ends that way, the truly collectable cars are those that made a mark, race wins, most power, iconic....etc I think you get my point. The E series GT's just don't cut it.

As someone who grew up with X series Falcs (including a near perfect factory original XA GT) I've thought about getting a E series onwards GT. But for me they just don't have the same aura and I'd prefer to put the money into a later model car that can be a weekend fun car but also double as a daily driver. |

I have owned a el gt they are a beautiful car to drive no rocket ship but still fun and comfy . If you wanted a little bit more power you could do the exhaust/intake/tune that will help it to breath a bit better and can be put back to original if wanted .
I don't think they will go up much in value as they don't really have a big following like that older x series cars and most of the younger generation go for the jap or euro cars these days .

I don't think any of the 90's or newer falcons are ever going to explode price wise like x-series. There will be exceptions but they won't really be the money making investment of earlier cars. I suspect the vehicles that do increase value aren't going to be the stuff like gt's it will most likely be the very low build number specials and oddities.
If your like me and like the El gt package, buy one, use it, add your own touches and just enjoy it. I would buy one in a heart beat and use it as it was intended to be used otherwise what's the point

Yes most certainly.
Even the guy advertising the 208km one for $100k would be taking a big loss if he sold for his asking price. He’s had a $70k ‘investment’ sitting there which was never driven and truly enjoyed, for 20 years. To me that’s a loss, even financially. I guess he had Falcon GT ownership bragging rights but I’d imagine most conversations went like this: “Yeah mate I own a GT Falcon” “Oh sweet, XY? XA?” “Nah, EL GT” “..... oh” |

Certainly better investments out there, no doubt.
I want to spend ~$30k on a car - it's not purely for equity but it would be a bonus if the car I bought could potentially increase in value over time. There's not a lot around these days pre, say, 90s that's good for $30k!

Want a return on a car in your lifetime? Buy the right pre 70's at a good price.
Im looking at pre 70's and i think a good value car at the right price is the American 66/67 falcon futura 2drs. Not asking as much as XY's and I think they're sexier than our XP's being a coupe. Only thing hotter is XL/XM IMO.

For $30k you would be made to pass up on either;
FG F6 AU T3 $30k also gets you a pretty decent non GS/GT in the X series aswell.

a T3 would be tempting, decent examples seem to be more than 30k.
Wouldn't take anything less than 8 cylinders, F6 meh lol

Saw a XC wagon come up for sale yesterday - $8k with old school look / Cragars. If it was closer to home I'd be snapping that up. But yes, it baffles me how those 2dr XYs don't have a strong following. We love XYs, we love coupes. Here's a car that is both but people walk past I don't get it. There's one thats been on the market for a good while now. He's lowered the price until he is saying I won't take anything under 20k. I was expecting that to be snapped up by now. |

Depends if you after an "investment" or enjoyment. You can have both in a sense but just go with what you want.

Theres a nice one on carsales that's converted to RHD using combo of US dash and I think AUS (XP?) speedo w/ 302 from 289 though. Im not overly mechanical - is 289 different block/crank to 302?

As much as I like the EL GT I can't really see it ever being worth a lot of money. 200kw is sort of crap these days, with the big power turbo 6's and Miami's that came later on making it look paltry. And it will never have the collectability of an XR-XB GT.

I'd be looking at this if budget permits, been available for a month now so probably negotiable.
http://www.adelaidevehiclecentre.com...edan/17095273/ Oops, just realised your budget is $30k, still a nice car and worth noting incase anyone else is in the market. Last edited by BENT_8; 13-02-2019 at 12:31 PM. |

Unfortunately there is nothing distinctly significant about these cars. The amount of people lining up to buy one at the inflated prices from dreamer sellers could be counted on one hand. Last time I saw one for sale (in NZ) was at $80k. For that price I could consider, Modern American muscle car - Mustang, Camaro, Challenger 1950s-'60s American in original condition with good options list. Old Aussie classics - Valiant Coupes/Chargers, GT/GS Falcons, 2 door Monaros. Modern Euros that a climbing in price - Porsche 993 - 997 911, 996 911 Turbo, BMW E46 M3 and BMW E39 M5. Who would choose an EL Falcon over any of them, for driving enjoyment or an investment?! |

a look on carsales 30-35K 200KW or more and you can get nearly 300 hits mostly:
FG GTs 300c SRT8s HSV GTS, VF SS you would have to really like the EL IMO to choose it above these

The 215kw senator and clubsport have a natural predator in the au3 220kw xr8.
Screwed them in straight line and I've blown them up on a race track lol!! Before the LS1 phenomenon the WINDSOR was king, the reliability, the noise and just a sweet car to pedal. |
