I one had the best polish product that I used on my VY SS from new.
Now with the new water based type of paint on cars I believe you have to be carful in what product you use. A mate up the road that has not had a car in 20 years was carrying on about how good my 2015 car paint is, oh he said I have some cut and polish that's really good ! I said f off ! you don't cut and polish the modern day paint that new cars come with nowadays. Their is only a clear coat over the top, so all you want to really do is to keep a wax over the top of the clear coat really and that's it in my opinion. I used Polyglaze glide on glaze a protective coating that came with a pad, you can not get it now but for a new version called 2. and I used it when I ran out of the original and it is total crap just rubbish in my opinion. The original was just so easy to use and cleaned up was magic, now I have use Mothers California ultimate wax system micro-polishing glaze and it's a pain to use compared with what I used with the polly glaze glide. So I had the SS for 12 years and out in the sun all day everyday mainly but garaged at night and that paint was as good as new when I sold it, it was Hothouse green. people would comment on it's shine and I would only polish it once a year. I had some pushy car park sharks try and put some product on my SS and I said don't you dare try and put anything on my car. So I am about to polish both my cars next month and I am wondering should I keep using the Mothers or change. Am I wrong ? I am not sure if I am doing the correct thing truly with the new water type based paints. Some Idiot has slid a box over the wife's cars boot lid of late FFS I believe that once the clear coat is scratched it's roo ted, you have to get the polish glaze on over the scratches or then the clear coat can then be compromised and in time end up bubbling up and expose the paint. am I wrong. |

You can polish, but depends how thick the clear coat is. Risk of burning through etc.
But I've sucessfully done it on my really bad shockwave falcon. Best used as a last resort when nothing is going to work anyway. Many modern products just fill in light scratches and swirls now, if that's what you're after for a modern paint DIY solution. There's many professional products you can buy from specialists that are best, but for the hoem user I'd start of with autoglym super resin polish. Not a real polish, just a petrochem fill in restorer you gently rub on and off. Then use turtlewax spray wax (really good these days). I used to use megs and mothers, (like regular or synth wax) thinking more work means the finish lasts longer, but that isn't true. All that work applying and buffing and it doesn't last much longer than spray sealants. (I'll do the full proper decontaminate, clay, polish, correction, wax, sealant every couple of years or when buying or selling.) But bi monthly it's just a wash, petrochem restoration, spray sealant. Which right now is autgylm followed by turtlewax spray (search it, I already feel you don't know how well the recent TW spray is reviewed and regarded now, so I'm expecting a spray LOL) |

You can polish paint to remove imperfections, but you don't want to be polishing too often.
I just get my cars corrected when new and get ceramic coating applied. My 4 year old Ranger with proper washing techniques still looks better then a new one.
