Price of Car Parts

Was chatting to a mate who works on his BF Falcon and he was saying recently he has found Repco cheaper than Supercheap.
Jefferson Automotive Group has a Parts Shop in Mitcham Victoria that sells Parts for the various New Car Franchises they sell, Ford, Mitsubishi, Skoda, Toyota etc and the Ford part prices are good.

I have always found that Repco is 99% of the time cheaper than Supercheap when buying spare parts. It can be even cheaper if you are a member of the NRMA (or whatever they are called in your state).

Repco seem to stock more spare parts as well. Unless you are buying a fluffy steering wheel cover, more and more stuff at Supercheap is becoming 'Special Order' and you have to wait for it. If I have to wait a few days for it I may as well buy it on line for a lot less most of the time.

I find Autobarn is cheaper for car audio and has a much better variety.

Supercrap seemed go have bumped prices to take advantage of things. But they have an exceedingly generous price match/beat offering, often going further than just matching the price. They will match any legit price.

Most recently I saved $77 on 2 bottles of Nulon 5w-30 6lt and $290 on a set of front Falcon calipers.

Makes them far cheaper than anyone else in this case.

But regardless, I tend to put off any big purchases from them to line up when they have their 20 or 25% off days. Next one due will probably be Black Friday sales.

Agreed, and I do this as well. I generally wait for these type of sales and stock up on consumables, for example, filters, fluids etc.

Supercheap's price match guarantee is very genuine and very easy. I use it for bosch aerotwin wipes. They are $45 in store but I can always seem to get them for around $25 on line. You go into the store, tell where you found them cheaper, they look it up in seconds and you pay that price.

I use Repco more for spare parts like, water pumps, wheel bearings. These are some of the parts that I don't keep on hand and if I need one straight away I can generally get it from Repco or even Autobarn.

I do feel more comfortable buying from Supercheap with their 'if it goes on sale...' price guarantee.

Speaking of which, I completed a survey with them recently and from some of the questions that I answered I have the feeling that they are considering replacing the 'if it goes on sale...' price guarantee with get $5 credit for every $100 you spend.

Go back a few models and you find Repco haven't a clue.

I'm back to Bursons but mainly independents (Betolli's, auto8) when buying XF parts these days.
Bursons are pretty good at tracking down genuine Bosch ignition stuff.

I'll give Supercrap a go for their tools only because the local one is full of older car nuts working there and they gave me a trade card.
Don't mind some of their Toolpro and Toledo stuff and actually made in India compared with Repco Chinesm quality stuff.

Truck parts seem to work out cheaper than some of the car stuff lately.

I buy 75% of my parts online, those that I don’t, I make supercheap match the cheapest online price I can find.

As an example, a Ryco service kit for SY Territory, $159 at supercheap. Got them to price match sparesbox at $80. Au radiator, can’t remember the brand but Supercheap stocked it and was $420, they price matched eBay at $140 and I had it that day. Just got to play the game.

Auto 1 give me trade price which always works out cheaper than others if I need something in a pinch.

I don’t use Repco, hate them with a passion, the store where I live are a bunch of arrogant ****s.

You have to wonder if its one of the worlds greatest marketing cons...

Supercrap now sell a product for $400. Random seller X sells it for $200. But even at $200 X is making money on it, so both X and Supercrap MUST be buying it for rather less than $200.

If Supercrap sell it for $400 to someone they have made a mega profit on the item.

But you or me go and get them to price beat and we get it for say $190, then we think we got a deal because we ultimately got it cheaper, often delivered for free to our home as well, Supercrap steal the sale from someone else and make a profit where there previously wasn't one.

So its basically a win, win, win and win for Supercrap... And in a way the consumer. I mean, I will always be going back to Supercrap for a price match now and they will potentially get the majority of my cash then.

As for my local Burson and Repco, I think I've only been to Bursons once since it opened. Repco only gets my business if they have a 20% special on and the price is good or if they have something on hand that I need right at that moment. As to me, thats all they are good for. Having most parts right when you need them.

Never EVER rely on ebay . In Aust its just another way to rip ya
Repco prices can be very elevated remember they are limited by the head office .specified price minimum .
Quality brand centre tail shaft bearing 70$ VS $300
repco only stocks and prefers to sell products they have the maximum profit arrangement with .
Dayco ,,Tridon were stocked once upon a time ,order only
Timing belt kits are a very good example of being very over priced same engine 180$ now 400$ Gates OR Dayco
Repco no where near competitive on leaf springs or full shackle bushing kit
Bendix pads have risen in price alot . I`m trying RDA and Protex now
Many suspension shockers and bushes cheaper at dealer
Oils is who ever is cheapest

Watch out for cheap quality shocks
Beaware of overpriced shocks . Some shocks comes from the same maker yet the reseller can vary prices 30% [Especially rebranded versions ]

Pretty much, the BAPCOR and GPC Asia Pacific brands have huge margins built into their product ranges, you'll slowly see less and less branded products in exchange for their own because they'll make way higher margins on it and give you two cents off so its lower than the name branded product.

If SCA is willing to price match and drop 3 figures off the price for a retail customer over the counter then they have absolutely huge margins on things and they'll still be making a decent percentage on that lower price too.

Most places work on a pricing matrix where there is a base price and then modifiers that gives plus or minus a percentage on that base price depending on what type of customer you are, where I was previously we had 30 different customer types and each one gave you different price modifiers depending on who you are as a customer and the category of product you are buying and how that fits in with your business.

Our base price was 'trade' and retail was base price + 20%

But I just gave everyone 'trade' over the counter and retail was reserved for pole smokers who tried to bargain with me or people who could revise their attitude - ****ers tax.

If there's 'trade' on the invoice people leave thinking they've had a good deal when in reality it's just the base price with no modifiers

You'll generally get better deals, prices and have more knowledgeable staff from independent auto parts resellers than the big guys who are basically the Coles and Safeway of automotive parts, but they don't have the reach that the big guys do

My local in my small town carries an absolutely massive range of Penrite stuff, and they're way cheaper than SCA/Burson/Repco, plus they carry a tonne of stuff on the shelf for old Falcons, Commodores and Kingswoods.

If you've got an ABN you can register for their 'trade club' programs too, they're competitive on pricing vs aftermarket over the counter on ridgey didge OEM parts, just claim you're a Mobile mechanic and they'll let you join their programs with a COD account.

Your local Ford dealership will also deliver to you free of charge and usually same day on your order too, mines 30km down the road and I order stuff and it just appears on my front door step when I get home.

They sell things like batteries, their own range of coolants, oils, brake fluids etc, I think last time I bought a bottle of oil from them it was $40 for 5L 5W-30 fully synthetic.

My local Holden dealership has the oil and air filters and the accessory drive belt in stock on the shelf for my Fiesta ST



Worth considering if you have an ABN, or if you want to register one and a business name it takes two seconds, means you'll be able to buy at better prices, and have things turn up on your door step same or next day.

Just had the pleasure of dealing with holden parts. Three small o rings about 20mm in diameter and a larger rubber gasket. About a dollars worth of material. Grand total of $151.55. The world really is effed.

I wonder is the gasket available somewhere else?
I have seen a few videos of rip off Part Prices.
One I saw was of a Part for a Luxury Car built by one of VW Bands.
The guy presenting the video claimed he was an Independent Mechanic and not totally up on all the nuances of VW.
He rang a mate who is a VW specialist, told him the make and model of the car and he said I have confirmed it is this part that is broken, and he said this part looks the same as a VW Golf Part.
The VW specialist confirmed the part was the same.
The Golf Part was a bit over £100 and the luxury branded part was over £1200.

Sometimes it’s worth delaying a repair to get cheaper stuff from overseas. RockAuto, Cars245, FCPEuro etc are all pretty quick to send stuff and once you’re at the $300 mark the savings kick in.
