Question Manual vs Shiftkit

hey guys .. new to the forum ...

i was just wondering what your opinions were on either a shiftkit or manual transmission ??? (yes i no a shiftkit isn't a whole transmission)

which do u prefer and why ?

as im lookin at gettin a manual .. but shift kit less expensive..

maybe someone could make a poll ? as im a n00b at that stuff :P


any comments appriciated.

Auto + Shiftkit if you're drag racing, or driving in heavy traffic.

Manual if you like to turn corners... and you can drive it in traffic if you don't mind the constant clutch, gears crap in 2 hrs of bumper to bumper

yeah .. coz i also like to do a bit of drifting as well..

so manual would help in that field.

depends how you drive it. open road driving is great with a manual, coming up beind a truck, shuffle down a couple and blasting past, minimal time on the other side of the road. i've only driven a stage 2 kitted c4 and found it got annoying after a while, especially in slow moving traffic. the changing was too savage. but then to drive it hard in straight line was a blast. manual box is my preference.

the shift kits cool, wak it back to 3rd and 2nd jump on it and its happy to rev out without killing it, ive had mine 2 years, only driven it twice in auto, wicked set up!!

It's got to be a manual for me. I do a lot of menial Sydney peak hour driving yet I'd never want to swap it for an auto or a sports shifting auto (though it is a major improvement over a plain auto).

yeah i wouldn't mind switching to manual ... as i like to go through my gears like a manual (change down when slowing.. changing up etc) : even tho its auto :

shiftkit shifts harder then a normal automatic transmission. so u don't lose as much time changing gears .. its pretty much instant changing ...

im not familiar with tiptronic trans :P

Dude you hit the nail on the head there.

Manuals suck **** when it comes to peak driving. Plus the good ol T5 I have in the XR6 ain't the most glamorous of gearboxes. Clunky POS.

Then there's the worry that you'll do a clutch when you put some power through it....and that ain't easy to fix. It seems an auto is a lot less drama.

I have a stage II shift kitted C4 and a T5 (in another car) and I much prefer the manual, even if it is a clunker. Heavy traffic beefs up the left leg and there's nothing like a drive in the hills in a manual, auto's just aren't as much fun for that.

i just got simmos shiftkit haha
id most def rather a manual
the shift isn't to hard but its cuts flare mad
and last night the roads were a tiny bit wet i gave it a little in 1st..nop wheel spin..it shifted to second and fishied a little bit...very nice suprise

for quicker take offs, the Auto is by far the better option, as the torque converter multiplys torque at take off (this don't mean better power over all, just at take off)

This means you get the jump on people at the lights (LOL trust me)
Auto is also better in high traffic

as for shift kits killing Autos quicker........ I dont think so.......(altho I did break my FMX auto LOL time for the C4)

but manual can be more fun, all depends on what your after from your car.

That's what I would have thought - with the manual, you can control how harsh or easy you are on gearchanges

Shiftkit from what i understand will actually improve the life of your transmission because the bands arent slipping for as long and therefore wont lose as much material off them

correct me if im wrong...

I believe you may be correct, manufacturer claim anyway. The down side is I have found it puts quite a shock through the rest of the drivetrain, got to damage it sometime. That is why I have mine turned off most of the time and only turn it on when the driving gets spirited!

I just swapped from a toploader to stage II C6, maunual trans can't cope with big power as well as auto.

Thats why I got the adjustable shiftkit. It is always on about 50% for normal driving (I turn it off when wet), and about 80-90% for hammertime.

It can be very harsh at 100%.

It sounds like the harshness is because, even though the electronic shiftkit is commanding a higher line pressure, the stock valvebody isn't able to deliver.

yeah i heard that a shiftkit improves the life of ur auto ...

i was also contemplating .. becoz ppl say it chirps into second even though u arn't floorin it .. if thats the case .. i don't want that to happen on a rainy day ..
but u said u can adjust it ?? how do u go about doin that ?? what stage kit is it ??
