Default Help for newbie to site.

Hi all, Just got myself an EA that has seen better days. I live in the country and the only affordable mechanic throws his hands up in the air with "these new fangled cars with electronics" so please bear with me if my questions seem a bit naive.

1, I have a steering fluid leak, down near the rack and pinion is a connector which has some electical wires attached. The leak seems to be there, what is the connector, is it repairable, for that matter how does it disconnect, and what are the wires for?

2, I have heard there is a way of "resetting" the autotrans computer by disconnecting the battery for a period, is this true and what is the procedure?

3, Is there anywhere online that has manuals and diagrams that I can print out to show the mechanic whats, what.

As I said sorry if these questions seem stupid, but as a mechanic I make a good shop assistant. :voldar02:

1. power steering switch, repairable yes, i think $75 from ford.

2. reset of ECU disconnect battery for 1/2 hour, then after re-connecting and starting it, do as many conditions as possible, i.e. a/c on and off, in drive, in park, drive it around the block, and give it a few good squirts so that it knows the value of WOT (Wide opne throttle)
May I ask what is your auto doing that you dont like.

3. Try the technical section link in the bar at the top of the forums, otherwise, just post the questions, yuo will get help.

RE auto trans, basically I guess you'd call it stuttering, slow to engage, and a bit adverse to change up. I was told that a reset might do the job.

Re the power steering switch, does it unscrew or is it some other method.
Is it likely that the leak would be there or seeping from higher up?

Thanks for your quick answer.

It'd most likely be the switch as they are very common thing to leak...

yeah unbolt/screw and in with the new, do it quick to reduce fluid loss.

well try the reset nothing to lose, if that fails I suggest looking at a service and gettting the bands adjusted.

What's with EAs and steering fluid leaks? I'm still annoyed about mine. My fluid levels have dropped substantially overnight

Thats what got me looking in the first place. :
I replaced the pump with one from a wreckers and that seems to have put a strain elsewhere, hence the switch leak?
