Default 3" performance loss?

Hey all,
I've been told I'll need a 3" exhaust system when I get turbo'd and I did get a pretty good price on the whole turbo kit, but I found out it was a pretty ****y turbo. The stage IV turb kit on snortperformance.com is more to my liking so I ordered one of them fellas instead. However now I'm faced with the interesting task on re-doing the exhaust system. I was quoted $500 today to put a 3" from the cat to the tip and leave from the front of the cat to the engine at 2" 1/2"" until such time as the turbo is fitted. Will this give me a performance kill, in theory it may as its going from a smaller cylinder into a larger cylinder.... maybe. I don't know, any ideas?

Ash

The snort kits come with a down pipe, so you would loose the 2.5" part when you get the turbo kit fitted. if you're talking about the factory cat and engine pipe, it's actually 2.25".

so yes, to answer your question it wouldn't be big enough and would hinder flow and thus power.

Dave.

It isnt the stock pipe or cat. I had 2 1/2 fitted about a yr ago and a new sports cat chucked on... that too small?

It might be better to get the exhaust done in one hit when you need it, including a full 3" cat and so forth.

3" will generally mean less power down low, its perfectly suited to the turbo so it may be something to do at the time.
the Turbo should have a 3" dump pipe off the back of it and it would be best to get a 3" cat to replace your current 2.5" one.

running the 2.5 inch initial part while you dont have the turbo should work ok as i think you will still have back pressure... might sound odd tho

I had a Pulsar ET that had SOME HUGE mods. It ran a 3" exhaust and 3" high flow cat etc etc. Down low it was a bit suck **** but as soon as the turbo spooled it hammered!!

Just make sure you visit a good exhaust centre man because a 3" can be SO SO loud and attracts attention, we all know police like to go through fast low and loud cars!!

Cheers.
