Havent got pics of it , but the latest effort i have done and running still is -
removed all existing box and snorkel from the front radiator back to shock tower across to guard and no lid just rubber to the line of the bonnet when closed, and the maf/pod is inside the isulated boxed area. This takes air from behind the headlight and all on the guard below. fully enclosed when bonnet is shut and the maf body is cool as well, it was notable that when the maf body was outside the box it was extremely hot and would imagine it affected the info (hot) to the ecu. 3 weeks on and all different ambient temps on days hasnt affected the cool box effect The next thing i want to try as the throttle body and pipe between the box is just as hot, is put a fibre gasket between t/b and plenim and heat shield the pipe to see if it affects it even more.

here's a couple, also remember the longer the pipe between the pod filter and throttle body, the more throttle response gain you will loose......
Should try to keep it the same length as the factory intake piping........... Last edited by jjj; 07-03-2006 at 04:21 PM. |

get a K&N panel filter will work heaps better and better on fuel and throttle response ,unless you put the pod filter inside your airbox like i have

just use the stock intake pipe on your car(on an EB i would use a EA intake pipe as they are larger).
A cheap way to block it from the heat is buy a heat blanket from autobarn and enclose it that way. All the skyline boys do it. You can buy a L shape bracket for about $10 from supercheap which fits around the 3in hose clamp on the pod neck and then bolt it to the car, makes it nice and secure.... |

No the ones i am talking about a metal alloy, so you can bend them with a vice or pliers to make a good fit.

Those TFI racing pods that cost $25, seem to flow as good as any other pod i have tried and i have tried a few like simota, unifilter, redline and k&n.
I just buy a new one every 6 months and throw the other one out... |

For all of these people with their pod filters sitting in the open engine bay... I found that it actually made my car go slower, You're better off with a stock intake rather than that. Yes I know it feels faster because throttle response feels better and it make more noise... but you are losing power!!

1) I have found when you enclose a pod filter inside the standard ford airbox and even with a additional intake, fuel consumption increases and power decreases more on long trips compared with an exposed pod. Got a factory fitted ford EL trip meter in the car... 2) Also in heavy traffic i have found that an exposed pod seems to output more power than a pod in a heat soaked air box. 3) Intake piping that is longer than the factory piping will reduce performance and throttle response. 4) I have used a heat blanket to enclose the entire air box space from the headlight up to the strut tower, exactly like the skyline boys use on their 13 sec R33's. This is the best method of heat shielding. It's Cheap, looks cool and actually works better than alot of home fabricated alloy heat shields. Cheers......................... |

1) If that's the case can you explain why I am making over 140rwkw and still geting 450-500kms per tank with stock ecu? I've had many other setups and I never got the fuel economy I get now when it was stock. Pod filter in the engine bay the car felt a bit sluggish. I've also tried pod filter directly on the throttle body which had great throttle response but the power was even more sluggish. I've got a non factory fitted ED trip computer in the car (your point? you don't need a trip computer to know how many kms you get to a tank) 2) Sitting in heavy traffic is worst for a pod in the engine bay... think of all the hot air just sitting around it that it will be sucking in. With a cold air intake you are still sucking in cooler air from outside the engine bay. So I can't see your logic in that. 3) Possibly? Can't comment on this because I havn't tried it. I'm still using the factory intake pipe. 4) I actually agree with you, I havn't seen the blanket you are talking about but it sounds like it would work well (will you run 13s now with your awesome skyline intake?). There are still better setups though... Like Kerry (TIKFD6) has made a custom box out of carbon fibre which looks and would work great. |
