ok so my car keeps chewing alternator belts every 100 or so ks im replacing it one mechanic i spoke to has told me to replace the harmonic balancer another has said something about crank bearings at the front or something!!!!!
someone know anything about this or experinced it?????? |

I used to have an Ea S pack that chewed up belts but my problem was the Air Con/PS belt there is tensioner on those belts and the bearing goes on them especially if the dust pan from under the front radiator has been removed otherwise if its just alternator remove the belt and check all pulleys for free movement or for any nicks.

1. check the current belt for wear.
2. start the car 3. get a rule and check there is no movement in the pullys eg alternator, idle pullys and harmonic balancer. to do this you just hold the rule horivontally above it and get close enough that you can see the staright edge of the rule and the pully. 4. if there is a wobble in the alternator it's only a bearing and thats easy to change if you got a few tools (though it shouldn't be it as the bearing in the alternator is huge). 5. if it's the balancer wobbeling it can be the rubber thing on it's stuffed it just needs to be changed. don't no anything about the bearings? mine was for the power steering and it was the idle pully. hope that helps. |

might be an alignment problem perhaps the alternator has been replaced and is not sqaure, might also be a possibility ,incorrectly fitted perhaps.

well i can see that the harmonic balencer is out of line with the alternator it chews the ribbed belts in half because it wont sit flat on the balencer

i bought a balancer today should i just put it on and see if it fixes the problem
