as im replacing the head gasket in my ea i was considering using an AU steel gasket and figured while i was at it y not put on an EF head.....does this just mount straight on where the old head did....or would i have to do some modifications? also what sort of price am i looking at for picking one up....and where?

I have a EF tickford head you can have for $400 if you want, they straight on as far as I know, I was going to fit it to my EB. You will need to fit your own valve springs though.

I have heard it lowers compression unless you have EB-> pistons.

It would lower the comp ratio as the ef heads dont have the bump in the chambers as the ea chambers do, just get the head shaved and chambers cc'd to EA specs, taking into consideration the thinner head gasket if u decide to use the AU one, that is if it really worries u

So 3.9 pistons are dished and EB/ED 4.0 are flat top?

I think EB onwards are just less dished. I was told the pistons were changed because the bump was removed. Considering the size of the bump I would have thought it would drop the CR a fair bit. I remember a while back hearing that an EF head on an EA block would give a good CR for turbo's.

That is exactly correct.
EA pistons = 13cc dish 4.0L pistons = 11cc dish (could be 9cc) EF head on EA pistons would result in arround 8.6:1 comp i would say. Have the EF head milled down to achieve arround 9.0:1 comp and you will be in business.

With the AU gasket, it would bring the comp back to normal as they are 20thou less than th E-series ones.

CRAP! i knew there was a reason why I was suppose to use a AU Headgasket instead of a Graphite one :(
Would a lower comp make it slower at all? or use more fuel?

Will all be fine, the computer will be handle the slight change in cam specs without a problem.
