Default Retarding Ignition Timing

My car seems to be getting light detonation on shitty fuel, so I want to retard the ignition timing a little to stop any engine damage... but I'm not entirely sure how to do this!

Would anyone be able to give me a quick rundown?

Thanks, apreciated
