Does anyone know what the tolerance if any for detected speed (to compensate for any radar error) in South Australia. I know its 3km/h or 3% over 100km/h in Victoria. Eg: Detected speed 67km/h alledged speed 64km/h.

So is that what they take off the "alleged" speed? Eg: Alleged speed in a 60km/h zone 67km/h detected speed 62km/h.

If your proceeding at 66 in a 60 zone, you'll cop a fine if caught. If your proceeding at 64 in a 60 zone past a radar you'll get away with it

Ok i was done passing through Keith S.A on Sunday lunch time. I admit i was speeding and should have been looking at the speedo and not the town. I was detected doing 77 in a 60 zone arond 100mts before the 80 zone. I know for 15km/h and over its 3 points and a $332 fine. My question is that the radar reading that was shown to me was 77km/h and thats what was put down on the fine. Here in Victoria it would have had 3k's taken off to compensate for any reading errors. Is this also the case in S.A or do they believe that the radars are 100% accurate therefore dont have any tolerance for error.

I'm not 100% sure on this but I don't believe they take anything off, the 5km/h tolerance is there to take into account any accuracy issues. So if you got done doing 77 in a 60 the fine is 17km/h over and that's it. That's how it been for the people I know who have had fines in the recent past

10% tolerance I believe. But that can change without notice. Id err on the side of caution though.

I asked a cop on the highway near Keith actually, said in the 110 zones you can do 119, but over that he would pull you over.

Were you stopped in the 60 zone, or in the 80 zone. After speaking with a traffic person/operator, they are not supposed to be within approx 200 metres of a speed change sign up or down. Yes, I know you should be at the speed when you hit the sign going down, but this is the written advice given to operators by the chief of police. |

No he was in the 60 zone on the opposite side of the road facing 90deg to the road. I pulled over just after the 80 zone sign. I was speeding and not sure how far i was away from the police officer when he detected me but i was speeding up towards the 80 sign which i know is wrong but alot of people do it. All i want to know is whats the reading error amount given (if any) in S.A.

That sounds like how it used to be, how long ago did you ask this policeman? I remember reading too a couple of years back they changed the leeway from 10km/h over down to 5km/h in SA |

I've always thought it was roughly 10% tolerance in SA but I try not to chance it.
As for knocking off 3kph or so on the recorded fine, I gotta admit I haven't heard of being common here. The first time I was done speeding the officer knocked me back a category but I believe thats solely their at thier discretion rather than a mandate.

Generally, but not always, most Ford Speedos are set at 3KMH below the speed.
IE driving at 63 KMH actual speed is 60 KMH, you can prove this with a GPS. So if the limit is 4KMH above the speed limit, this means you could effectively drive at 66 KMH, off your speedo, once you have proven the speedo incorrect. This does not apply to some aftermarket wheel sizes and tyres, as this will alter the speedo amount it is incorrect. always check with a GPS first.

I always thought that the tolerance was built into the radar so the radar is showing lower than what you are actually travelling.

Every Ford ive owned in the past 10 years had read about 2-3 k's under.
"Detected" speed is the speed the police "detected" you travelling at, "alleged" speed is the detected speed minus a few k's (say 3kph) for the benefit of doubt that they "allege" you were doing... If you were detected at say 110k's your speedo was probably showing 113kph but they're only booking you for 107kph...

Sorry to say, but if you were booked doing 77 in a 60 zone, that's what the fine will read. They won't take any off what you were doing. So it'll stand as it reads. 3 demerit points and $300 odd fine. It su#ks, but we've got to keep these gov't coffers in a job now. :evil3:

They changed the ADR rulings about this in 2005.
It now reads as 3%-, not the old ruling of 10% either way. Also you cannot use GPS readings to prove you were going below the limit (they closed that loophole not long back) That being said, ive gone past marked HWP in NSW doing 105-109 in a 100 zone (he had the gun out) and haven't been pinged over it, comes down to the officer more then anything. Fixed cameras don't have any leeway at all, if your caught doing 77 then that's the speed you get slugged for, as they use a more accurate way of measuring rather then by RADAR/LIDAR. Edit: Ive also yet to see a standard car read lower then the actual road speed (aka speedo says 100 but your doing 115 for example) |

one little trick I like is that as long as you can see corners ahead with no one coming...., when a cop does come round the corner he cant get a correct speed because of the angles. Ie in a 100 zone, you are doing 100, he is oncoming round the corner at an angle of 15 degrees so his reading is 100-15/90= 83km/h. He can only get your speed at 100 when he is straight on to you.
Once that saved me big time!....brake brake brake....!!Phew!! |

Just to say , I know for a fact that the radars on the side of the road and the speed and red light cameras are set at about 7 kms over, eg. if it was a 50km/hr it would only detect you speeding if you were doing 57km/hr,
I got done doing 58 in 50 and the person at the courts when i went to pay the fine explained how unlucky coz if i had of been doing 2 kms slower i wouldnt have been pinged! |

Both My BA XR6 and BF F6 are about 5kms under the indicated speedometer reading (60kmh) using a GPS. I heard this was a little safety net done by Ford, please correct me if Im wrong.

That could just be tyre wear, good to hear some thing different though, I dont mind it being lower though gives me a little headroom so to speak.
