OK heres the problem, my EA ghia (5sp with 3.23 on diff tag) makes a grinding noise the slower i take off and occasionally a clunk turning through slight bends.
No noise or clunk under clutch dump from 1500-3000rpm, taking off straight or turning. Worst noise is at 5-10kph with the clutch in or out makes no difference (So i doubt its the gearbox). The LSD virtually doesn't work at all. Is it the clutches on the LSD are stuffed and the rest of the internals are intact?? Am I up for a new diff or is it possible to just remove the LSD clutches (I dont care if i have LSD or not on it as its almost stock).

Yeah, there is no slack in the uni joint or the tailshaft.

I think one of the teeth from the side gears in the diff are worn/broken (too many burnouts...), so maybe thats why you hear a clunk when turning.

Yeah i agree the clunk is most likely from a worn gear, but shouldn't it clunk on a fast take off?? I ask the question about the LSD clutches because when i bought the car, the LSD didn't really work, but apart from that the diff was perfect. Recently the diff whine has been getting louder, and the grinding noise at snails pace has been getting worse.

Hey my diff is exactly the same!
I have been a little slack to pull it down (Been the same for about 1 year now), but 95% sure its just the clutches chattering. The clutches need to be re faced, and given a little extra shim. Don't bother trying heaps of different oils, didn't do much for me. Simon |

Great so if i just put up with the noise it should keep going for a while yet.
What are the implications of driving with a worn diff, will it damage anything else??

Every time a diff starts making noises like that for me, it has died soon after. Admittedly, I tend to thrash them even after the noises start, and they tend to die soon after (or during) the thrashing.

I killed the single spinner in my ED, diff bounce tends to do that (Full LSD conversion/rebuild wasn't cheap). But when that happened it was a loud bang/crack each time i tried to take off hard.

ED I6 - actually the first diff I destroyed was an LSD, but it was shagged and started acting like a single spinner mind-burnout ;)
nutrok4 - my EA really isn't much, it's almost 100% standard now :P I used to have 4.11:1 LSD, K&N, extractors and zorst, but I blew the 4.11s and replaced with a cheap 2.77:1 single spinner (which is dead now aswell, replaced with a 2.92:1 single spinner), muffled up the zorst because I got sick of the sound and replaced the K&N with a normal paper unit to reduce noise. So yeah, my car is now a stocker and I'm saving the pennies for a V8. I've lost all motivation to do up a six, they just don't sound like a V8, and don't have half the street cred. |
