Default air bag suspension

hey guys, just a quick question for you!

I WAS THINKING, is it legal to have airbag suspension on our cars in VIC?
i used to work for a mate that does custom 4X4 modifications HERE and one of his MAJOR mods are AIRBAG-ing 4X4's as you can see his Dodge etc etc.
I can get them for cost price and labour for peanuts and wanted to know if it would be legal.

or should i pour that money into the engine??????

anyhelp would be great.
Rob

Rob - with the price of fuel at the moment, aren't you already pouring money into the engine? LOL

I would do engine mods rather than air bags, but it's up to you.

hahaha good point! lol

its just that i would see it as an advantage to have air bags, when your on the highway dump it, when your driving in and out of driveways jack it up a few inches etc etc.

i will give it a miss on this car anyway.

you lose handling characteristics with airbag ... in other words ... it'll handle like a bowl of jelly.

spend the cash on the engine me thinks.

Crap. I have just tonite been in a 54 Caddy that has had air bag fitted and the ride is beautiful. Have you ever riden in a late model Chevy pick up they all have air ride suspension. It all depends on who fits it and if they know what they are doing. As for ligality no they arent. You still have to have them engineered.

I inquired about an airbag setup on the AU yesterday, i was told they haven't developed any kits for the falcon, something to do with having to manufacture a new upper control arm as the factory unit doesn't have enough clearance....commodores don't have this problem apparently.

If it is fully engineered then i supose they shoudn't have a problem with it. Although if they have to remanufacter uper suspesion arms then it would cot a packet.

speak to cali customz @ www.calicustomz.com he is in melb somewhere

or www.locolowriders.com (ring them or email them as they do car stuff as well as bikes)

or www.hoppndrop.com.au

all are very good at what they do and cali customz has put bags in a fair few autosalon featured cars ... and many others and also does hydraulic suspension(putting that im my AU fairlane very soon)

i believe what you were told about clearance issues is correct for bags
but hydros are a totally different kettle of fish..

1 thing that does amaze me is the thin ness of the upper control arm in the AUs :O.. makes ya think it would snap so easy!

easiest way 2 check for legality tho is 2 ring the department of transport for your state
and or ring 1 of the above for any questions you may have

Air bagged vehicles can be set up to handle better than a sprung car, it is all about control.
I looked into this, but as the AU does not share a common suspension with anything from America, there is no airbag system developed for it.
Big Bickies. $6000+ to do it properly. I wish!
