I did mine about 3 months ago, it's pretty straight forward.

Remove wheels.
Exhaust tail piece.
Tailshaft.
Lower control arm outer bolts.
Pry out CV's from diff.
Diff bolts.
Lower diff while holding out lower control arms.

To fit new diff, do the above in reverse order.

Took me about 4 hours, and I hadn't done one before.

And a bit more here

http://www.fordforums.com.au/showthr...light=IRS+diff

No real problems as Sox says but it s easier with 2 people and if you have all FINGERS and THUMBS in working order

Not really, check the CV boots, tailshaft unis, but it's probably all ok, otherwise you might have noticed anyway.
Maybe even have a glance at the gearbox extension housing seal.

Yep, change it.
Takes all of 5 minutes, and $10 or so.

I doubt it special tools will be needed. Just a time consuming job to do and no doubt a heavy one. Just don't rush the job, and check and recheck everything once the new one is in. You may need to refer to the manual for torque settings of some things, but should be straight forward.

What is this ring. Does it need replacing or do I bend it in or what?

Leave it on, doesn't need replacing.
It holds the axles in.
