so my diffs died. im gonna give it a crack on my own. i have access to a hoist which will help. is it an epic job or is it do able? im going to have a 2nd car and so time isn't as much of a restraint as it could be. do i need any special tools?

I did mine about 3 months ago, it's pretty straight forward.
Remove wheels. Exhaust tail piece. Tailshaft. Lower control arm outer bolts. Pry out CV's from diff. Diff bolts. Lower diff while holding out lower control arms. To fit new diff, do the above in reverse order. Took me about 4 hours, and I hadn't done one before.

sweettt!!! i've found a killer diff in sydney from a friend. so i'll get that when i get some $$$ together.

Not really, check the CV boots, tailshaft unis, but it's probably all ok, otherwise you might have noticed anyway.
Maybe even have a glance at the gearbox extension housing seal.

I doubt it special tools will be needed. Just a time consuming job to do and no doubt a heavy one. Just don't rush the job, and check and recheck everything once the new one is in. You may need to refer to the manual for torque settings of some things, but should be straight forward.

Leave it on, doesn't need replacing.
It holds the axles in.
