Default AU 2 Tail lights into AU 1.

Will series 2 Fairmont tail lights function in my AU 1 XR8? Are they wired the same?

Cheers.

Yes and No

The lights fit but the plugs changed, so you can solder/join the wires or get an adapter plug.

If you buy genuine I think it comes with it.

exactly the same, only difference was clear lenses on the indicators for the series 2
only change you will need to make is changing your indicator globes to orange ones
