You want to see big HP diesels, check out Cummins 6BT and the later 6.7L I6 diesels.

That Cummins 6bt can easily make 400hp cheaply at around 3500 RPM, pick up a "Diesel Power" magazine off the shelf.

Enough to power a full weight Dodge RAM into the 12 second 1/4 mile bracket.

Lotta people just don't get that about diesels...the kw number is meaningless...when you buy a diesel, the figures that matter are the torque figures. Our Mitsubishi Triton GLX-R dual cab fourbie has a 2.5ltr turbo diesel four cylinder backed b a five speed auto. It "only" puts out 130kw...not much, pitiful in fact if you were talking about a 2.5ltr four cylinder petrol engine...but it puts out 350nm of torque, and you sure do know about it when you put the foot down.

Diesel cars are the same...none of them make huge power outputs, but that is meaningless...the torque is what matters completely with a diesel...the kw number is secondary. The other important figure is fuel efficiency...which cannot be approached by a petrol engine in terms of amount of energy extracted from the fuel.

How many KW per litre can a 4l barra motor make ???
Get the comp ratio up around 20 :1 like most diesels
Turn the boost right up,throw a bigger badder cooler on it
Throw it on a dyno till it screams enuf, youll be surprised
But how long will it last day after day, week after week
Theres too many wee littlee diesels that make great power on paper, but in real world are as usefull as towing a tandem trailer with a Hyundia
People don't drive around in 1st gear doin 9,000 rpm
Most use diesels for their low revving torque, thats all there known for
Most diesels have a comp ratio over twice that of a normal petrol engine, dont think thatll help squeeze power out

The new mazda 6 has compression ratio's of 13.0-1 petrol and 14.0-1 for the diesel.

A little bit of physics just to help you as almost everyone who has posted does not seem to understand.

Power = torque * RPM.......end of story.

If you have 5 engines:
1) A supercharged V8 running on 98RON
2) A N/A 4 running on E10
3) A turbo I6 running on e85
4) A turbo 6 running on diesel
5) A stroked clevo with a cam with more lumps that the great dividing range and a carby that you could hide Ayers Rock inside.

If all 5 engines are doing the same RPM e.g. 3000rpm and all 5 are demonstrating 200Nm of torque then all 5 will be demonstrating 62.8318 KW.

This is commonly misunderstood.

Another example is the FG XR6T which according to specs will demonstrate 533Nm linearly from 2000rpm to 5000rpm

power @ 2000rpm = 113Kw
power @ 3000rpm = 167Kw
power @ 4000rpm = 226kw
power @ 5000rpm = 280kw

This how it works for all engines, the kw/l or whatever is just marketing spin.

So exactly how does a 1 litre Diesel engine produce 100 KW without increasing the burn rate significantly?

It just burns more efficiently, obviously.

In the same way the every other engine did as it evolved.

This is a new frontier for a diesel to be able to achieve the required rev range.
Then again German is the language of science.

What are you on about the rev range mate? The cummins engine I drive has a usable rev range of 2000rpm and produces 525 horsepower and over 1800nm of torque in that rev band. You don't need rev's to produce horsepower. But 1 ltr to produce 100kw is good going it must be a good efficient lump. The above cummins is a 15ltr.

I think that nobody seems to get it.
Diesel is a slow burn fuel ...the only way to get 100KW from ONE LITRE is through v high revs.
It seems to me the fuel or delivery system would have have to be fundamentally changed to achieve RAPID burn to get the necessary revs.
My 'chipped' 2.7 Wrangler made 156KW equal to just under <60KW/L.

Thats pretty low for a diesel, IIRC my Focus is around 16:1 compression, and my GMC Sierra is around the 20:1 to 22:1 compression ratio.

All these DI diesels have lower compression ratios, but 14 is pretty low for a diesel.

No idea, but if you want that contest, check out Honda S2000 engines (F20C)

That's the other thing about diesels...long life.

If a car with a petrol engine has for example 150,000km on it and you try to sell it, a buyer will usually say "Ooo...that's a lot". If it was a diesel with 150,000km on it, a buyer will usually say "Is that all?"

You couldn't run a petrol engine at diesel compression ratios...because diesels don't have to spark the mixture. Inject the diesel under the massive compression and it spontaneously ignites.
