Absolutely nothing wrong with engine breaking. As mentioned already, the ZF does this automatically when on a steepish descent and breaking, it'll shift down to a lower gear to assist with maintaining a slower speed.
Obviously it is to ASSIST with braking, not negate the need for the brake. If it's so bad to use gears to slow down, why do they design them this way. I sometimes wonder who really knows the facts and who makes **** up ![]()
