Default WS/WT/WZ Fiesta EPAS

Hello guys,

The electric power steering setup on the WS/WT/WZ Fiesta, I believe there is an electric motor that mounts in the steering column, but is there anything different on the steering rack end?

Is the system just the electric motor on the steering shaft that does all the work with a manual style steering rack on the bottom?

Thanks much guys

In my workshop manual, the only mention of the EPAS connection is the steering column.

I've seen one on the floor in my mate's workshop, and it looks like an electric motor & bevel gearbox on the column itself, and a traditional non-power rack.

The gearbox casing on this one had split in an accident, and you could see some sort of slip clutch arrangement in it so you could still turn the wheel even if the electric motor was not functioning.

Until I saw it, I thought they had an electrically driven pump and traditional hydraulic rack, so it taught me something new.

Nowhere near as elegant (or compact) as the Territory solution though. That's a real work of art compared to the Fiesta.

Might be an easy option for a power steering retrofit on an old car, take the entire column assembly and join it up in the middle after the motor assembly.

The only thing is what input the controller wants, or if you can run it by just feeding it power and a fake speed signal.

How does the Territory EPAS setup work?

It works off numerous inputs to the PCM, and I believe it even considers some of the DSC data, like yaw rate.

Speed is the main one, as well as steering angle, and you could probably get away with just those. But you need to drive the motor correctly - that's the hard part.

The xc barina power steering set up is better for retro fitting into older stuff cos the fiesta set up weighs a ton
