Default Going car shopping next Saturday on Parramatta road, any tips?

Hrm, well, it's my first car, I'm heading down to syd with 6 grand cash looking for an EL fairmont.

I've been looking and 5 - 6 grand seems to be the general price range for a EL with about 160,000km on it.

Anyway any locals up there know of any really worth while places down there? I plan to get the trading post on the way up and find some dealers in there.

Paramatta road is the car central, so I shouldn't have a hard time finding an EL Fairmont for cheap.

I'll have my 6 grand in cash too, so I've got something to bargen with, hopefully will get 500 dollars of the price of the car with cash.

Oh, and can we not post in here about "I'm selling my car, buyit" and then cry at me when I dont want an overpriced Xr6? Even if it is from a ford lover, I'm looking at dollars, not how many times you've polished it in the last 6months :P

oh, and I'm grabbing some pacemakers and getting 2-1/5 exaust all the way through, with a GT snorkle and K&N filter straight up, will I get a few kilowatts out of those mods? Or should I just put it towards the XR6 engine I'm planning to buy and drop into it?

Thanks a lot!

Just be careful on Para road. They all like to take you for a ride. Not being racist or anything but they ALL take you for a ride down there. I was stupid enough and paid 6 g on a EF Fairmont down there 2yr ago and then had to spend 3g+ fixing the engine brakes, gearbox etc. The whole thing Drove like a dream and then promptly fell apart about 2 months after I took it home. NO WARRANTY!Trading post and PRIVATE sale is best option!

oh cheers man, yeah, I'm after something with atleast three months warrenty, I'll punish it for those three months and if all is well it seems like a good car.

There are some nice privates, but they're a bit on the stray side of things (I'd be driving from one side of sydney to the other, very hectic lol)

Hopefully we dont get sucked in to any bad deals, might even pick up a Ghia if I'm lucky, but I have my old man with me, and he's quite cluey, so we'll hopefully have no problems picking out duds lol.

Well personally, unless its an amazing example I see no point buy an older 2nd hand car form a dealer.

I too fell for the trap, had the RACV check done and then 2-3 months later it wasn't a pleasent experience.

Unless its got less that 30000k's i wouldn't bother with a dealership. Plus 99.9% of them are shonky anyway.

I was having a look at a mondeo st24..the terd wouldn't let me drive it unless I was willing to buy the car then and there. I promptly left.

Oh and try and keep emotion out of it, there are plenty of cars around.

I definitely think you should give me $7500.00 & drive this away. The wife has had enough of V8 driving and wants a new Focus (maybe she'll wait for the XR5)

A) I dont have 7500 :P And B) I'm restricted to 6cyls in NSW :P Thanks anyway

Yeah, well, me and the old man will have a good look around, he knows a lot of the tricks and he was a mechanic before he changed careers lol.

I'm looking at something with 130 - 160,000km on it. It's a first car, I'm scraping up the pennies as it is :P

Thanks a lot for your help, I'll have a good look at some privates if they're within the general area

Dont EL fairmonts come standard with the XR6 engine or is that just the ghia's?

Also dealers will be looking at the dollars more so than yourself, you may get it a grand or so cheaper but it will proabaly be a neglected pos that you will just have to keep spending money on fixing stuff because the car was never cared for or maintaned in the first place...

From my understanding, all the faclons through to ghias have the same engine, and XR6s only get the trickford bits (head and ECU mainly)

it just works out better for me to buy a whole new block, so I can send the other one away to get bored out and fully worked ready for supercharging when I'm allowed to supercharge
