Default Engine Recon

I have an EBII S/Wagon (6 seater) 4.0L. A better family car you will NOT find. Had the master cylinder replaced, auto trans service, Air Con service and head done just before Christmas (2005), has now done the rings. I could put an exchange motor in, but I have just done the top end, so wouldn't mind doing the bottom end and having a fully reconditioned motor when all is said and done. I need an affordable option to do this. I am in Melbourne (Mulgrave) and I need help.
I found out about this site following a silver E series wagon along Queens Road just around Grand prix time. It had a sign in the back window. To whoever that was, thanks for the link.

Anyone with a decent short motor for the EBII 4.0L? Or else anyone who could do the job less than the small fortune most people so far have quoted? You could have the car for as long as it took (eg in your spare time etc). Trying to work within a bit of a budget, but desperately want to keep the car. Big ask I know, but if there is anyone can help, they are probably a member of this site. SE Suburbs of Melbourne.

Thanks

This is total ing bull, you can get a descent bottom end for around 150-200 bucks from wreckers, where the are you guys getting your figures from? I understand the AU bottom end was that much coz of the low k's but anything with under 200,000Km will do.

Some wreckers might supply all parts and labour for a new(er) motor, try calling a few. The AU 4.0 route will definitely bring the best long-term results.

my 'quote' was if you keep your original block (like i did) and get it dropped, board and honed, crank machined, full balance, new mains and big ends, new pistons, old pistons taken off rods and new ones pressed on, deck machined 4 thou and new welch plugs. so i thought $870 was quite good for all that to be done.

EB Pete, when you say quote, is that a quote from you, or is that what you paid. Any other problems?

that was what i paid. it was full price too. my crank didn't need machineing actually so it only got polished but it had 230 000km on it so i think it held up real good. i didn't even need the oversize pistons cause the bore wasn't oval but i thought i might aswell while it was out. i don't really know what ya mean by other problems but really i could of just slaped new pistons and rings in but i wanted a balanced motor and thought i might aswell 'make a new one' seeing as it had a few k's on it plus it had low oil pressure so i was thinking it might of been the mains but it wasn't but there all sweet now. have you got it all out yet? if so just have a look at it and see what you think. i think i only did it cause i'm young and wanted to learn all about it.

i was comparing the facts of a rebuild versus engine transplant just recently.
think the thread was called rebuild vs transplant.

anyway turns out to be about $2000 either way, thats to have the engine professionally rebuilt or have an AU motor professionally converted. of course it costs less than that if you can do your own labor or source parts.
