i was just reading royal auto, : (was bored) and an interesting letter came in from a guy that got some figures from caltex, and yes i know we all are sick of people complaining about fuel prices but still...
A barrel of crude oil contains 159 litres. From 27% of that they get petrol, then 10% kerosene, 15% diesel, 22% lubricating oil, 16% cylinder oils, and 10% tar. So from every barrel they get 42 litres of petrol, for every dollar a barrel of oil rises, the cost of petrol should only rise by 27 cents for that 42 litres of petrol, which is 0.6 cents per litre. Even if it rose by $5, thats only 3 cents per litre...

My god.... :
Does that mean that oil companies are ripping us off??? Who knew? lol... typical of them though, even if there is a rumor of something that could force the prices up, they will do it anyway. The price of oil goes up a little bit, and the petrol goes up heaps... how do they justify that? The petrol price isn't too bad at the moment, so lets just hope it stays that way.

There are other factors besides the price of crude which determine what we pay at the pump. I don't doubt that oil company profit grabbing and probable engagement in anti-competitive practices explain some of the disparity but certainly not all.
Read this link for more information on how the pump price works. Fuel pricing factors |

I still wouldn't call $1.27 a litre at the pump good pricing - but an improvement from the $1.39 we were paying a month ago here in Central QLD... Lets hope it keeps going down!!
Interesting facts though...

There's nothing that brings prices down like a little bit of competition. Hence the sudden drop since the LPG subsidy. Now imagine if hydrogen and CNG take off...
Nice to see some hard numbers to show what the effect of crude oil costs should be at the pump. Considering plastics are hydrocarbons made from crude oil, should the price of plastics be going through the roof right now?

Why do oil companies rip people off?
Because they can! It costs 10 bucks to have a cheque printed at the bank now! For a piece of paper and some ink! Now, exercise books still cost the same (and they contain lots of paper) and to my knowledge, there has been no major increase in ink prices! The fact is that it doens't always come down to market prices. Sometimes it's just companies being greedy jerks! |
