Default questions...

a mate bought a lowered AU 2 weeks ago. today he hit a speed hump fairly hard and now there is a 'ticking/rattling' noise coming from under the car. when he was stopped on the phone to me the dash flashed DTE at him and the car beeped at him. anyone got any ideas as to wots going on?

the knocking could be a loose bolt in the shock absorber or something like that, same thing happened to my mates commodore, i checked the rear end out and found the passenger shock was just banging against the diff. don't know if its a likely scenario but at least it's worth a look.

the dte and beeping is a result of having low fuel. DTE - Down To Empty. My guess with the rattle would be exhaust, may have snapped a bracket.

cant think of anything other than whats already been said, best bet is to get under the car and shake things until you find something that moves:P

its a suspension component for sure, just track it down to a side/end and then get a torch out and have a look. no one on here is going to be able to tell you exactly whats come loose from a description of the sounds.

i understand that im just asking for ideas as to where to look (its possible someone has had the same thing) and my mate isnt very mechanically minded. he rekons the noise is coming from under the middle of the car. is it possible he has knocked the auto out of alignment when scraping over the speed hump?

He could have damaged the cat, or muffler, breaking a baffle or something like that.

The ticking could be pinging too. He may have squahsed a fuel line, so not enough pressure = car running lean, causing pinging.

He could have dislodged an exhaust bracket (already covered above), or he could have snapped a shock absorber or engine mount.

The list of things he could have done that cause a rattle is almost endless. If he can afford a car, he can afford the running costs, so tell him to take it to a mechanic to have it checked out.

I have a similar problem with mine, and I have to be honest, Ive spent hours under my car on a hoist shaking things, looking for various bits and pieces that could have packed it in or be loose and vibrating, and Im yet to find it. Take it to a mechanic, and let them deal with it i say!
