Hi Guys. Can someone tell me the good news on ignition keys. I have one of the original keys. no problem. The guy I got the car from gave me another one, just cut, looks identical.fits the lock OK.starts the motor OK and motor runs for half a second or so then staggers and stalls.!!!! Its a 1999 December built AU Fairmont. How can it be that the keys are the same but one is OK and the other only starts ???? There is no aftermarket security fitted ,its stock standard, does't matter if you use the remotes or not, same results. Has anyone had this problem before??? Need some help here, thanks I J Cam

That is the immobiliser doing it's thing because the key hasn't been trained.
Hence the system doesn't recognise the unique code of the new key. Here's how to train it (page 73 of ford owners manual): Two originally coded keys are needed:

With your left foot on the horn, and the petrol filler should be semi open, and you right eyelid on the horn, and left bum cheek in the passengers cupholder....

Mate just go see a Good (Master)Locksmith. Most advertise if they can program your key. If its a transponder key you have , a locky should only charge 20/30 bucks to introduce to car. 10 min job. If they have equipment.

Hi Guys, The info that you have given me seems to be for an AU with the transponder key, mine is the early model and the key is identical to an ED,therefore has no transponder. I talked to a locksmith and he said"have a look at the Ford Forum, they will have a thread somewhere" .I have looked but can,t find it. I,m bushed ??!!!{{XXX IJCam

Sent it to the mechanic, and he reckons he had to just keep doing it and finally lucked out after like 10 minutes. Mentioned that he's seen a few do it too

If your motor starts then cuts out its a transponder. Unless ur smart lock is playing up but it would also play up with other key. Get good key checked if its transponder or not.
